1257983 2012-02-08 03:42:00 Just today I've been starting to notice and have some odd things going on. I don't suspect malware but perhaps I might be open to the suggestion that there's a mechanical problem.

System: XP-Pro SP3; 2.6G RAM; 4 500G hdds with approx 50/50 file partitions for 8 V-HDDs. I also have a 1TB external backup. XP is loaded onto HDD J which has never been a problem for a few years so far

Last night I forgot to turn off the external backup HDD, and I fired up this AM with it already ON and running. Then the fun began.

After a few dozen attempts to get the puter to run, I went into the BIOS and tried switching around the primary boot-up to HDD 1, HDD 2, HDD 3, HDD 0, etc ------------ nope. I don't even have a floppy installed, so don't go there.

So I dug up the original XP installation disk (long story) and was gonna restart with a repair call, and it never got to the XP disk --- it just started normally. That's the way it is right now - running normally AFAIK.

Yahoo! Maybe yes. Maybe no.

Anyone suspect anything more sinister? Should I back up everything and start all over again?

I've got a couple more new-in-the-box PATA hdds. so there's that to consider. The hdd running as first boot is just two years old at the mo.

1257984 2012-02-08 05:05:00 DMI Pool? What error did you get about that?

As far as I know, any errors about DMI Pool data not updating or being incorrect are a symptom of something screwing up with your motherboard, sometimes a crappy BIOS, but if you are just getting the error recently I would expect hardware failure or impending hardware failure.

That's why.
As it didn't kill anything, I wouldn't worry about it.
Except leave the external disconnected - from both the PC and the power socket on the wall.
