1233864 2011-09-27 08:30:00 Hi all

I am currently working at a Telcommunications in a customer support role from Monday to Friday and I am studying this also
www.unitec.ac.nz which finishes in December
I have worked for my current company for a bit over 5 years. I have one MS cert in Windows 7 and intend to complete mcitp also
I intend to take 2 weeks off in late jan , early feb and submit my CV to lots of companys within the 2 weeks and hopefully get some interviews in those weeks , is this a good way to go about it? as in my current role its not easy to get leave on short notice
I am looking at a Helpdesk / System admin or Network admin role

Thanks for your help

1233865 2011-09-27 20:52:00 I wouldn't recommend 'shot-gunning" your CV around the marketplace. Hard to keep track of who you've sent it to and who you haven't, especially if you end up using recruiters to get a job - you can be excluded from consideration even if you're totally suited to the role, in case there's an argument over whether the employer already knew of you or whether the recruiter first presented you.

Also, not much happening at the time of the year you mention in the way of hiring - people just getting back from their summer break, end-of-year often occurring in March, so budgets running down. I find the best hiring time is after April 1.

The best way to go is to target the company (or a small group of companies) you want to work at and find someone who works there that knows you (or a mate who knows someone there) who might be able to give you a recommendation. Word of mouth is far more effective than posting a CV and crossing your fingers. Most CVs through the mail get dumped in the bin.

Treat the job search as a job, rather than something to do during lunch or after work

Are you trying to find someone to agree with you?

1233867 2011-09-27 22:29:00 Ok thanks for the advice all , just trying to find the best way to get ahead as its not to easy to take time off my current role with short notice and I want to find a new role as soon as possible so I can put into practice what I have learnt this year. AndrewNZ (11616)
1233868 2011-09-28 03:33:00 Then you have two options:
1) Look for a job while you're working where you do, and meet after hours with a recruitment agency
2) Leave your current job, then look for work, at any time.
