The spin-on effect of this, besides glacial melting and sea level changes is an increase in temperature of the permafrosts and the deeper layers of water. Beneath these permafrosts and deep, cold waters are layers of methane hydrates. Kinda like a frozen liquid methane. In fact, there's estimated to be HUGE deposits of methane. A little bit of warming may lead to this methane being released into the atmosphere. Methane is severely more disturbing to global temps than CO2... so once the methane begins to bubble up we may hit the threshold of runaway, unstoppable temp rises, and more and more potent methane release. The consequences may be felt on life for many millenia. Anyway, back to the CO2, another effect of raised CO2 is acidification of the oceans, and a very modest change in ph it seems will lead to lowered O2 levels in the waters, and massive algal blooms. O2 breathing aquatic life may suffocate when the algae deplete the water of O2. If the fisheries go belly-up abruptly we'll see many millions of people starve. Once people are starving they tend to turn to war, violence and civil unrest... not the sort of social decay anyone would enjoy trying to live through (regardless of the temperatures). Life could turn a whole lot more sh!++y for billions of people... fairly quickly. How to survive such a scenario? Get a lifetimes worth of canned and dried foods, seeds, guns, and tons and tons of ammo. Get a taste for killing, canabilism, and going without sleep 24/7 while you try to guard your hoard from the hungry hoardes. It will likely be a case of survival of the meanest once society breaks down. |

Ok Paul, lets say that Global Warming has been escalating over the last century and ice is melting . How do you explain? 1: Why the North West Passage is not available today for shipping, even though Amundsen found his way through over 100 years ago in a tub one could hardly call an Icebreaker . 2: Why was it in 1974 eminent scientists were predicting another Ice Age because temperatures had been falling . 3: How, even if the proposition was right about Global warming, will extra Tax fix the problem? Im afraid Im with those that see it a rort and Ill wager that Gareth Morgan and John Keys (not so blind) Trusts are well set up to pocket millions from carbon tax trading . Of course it wont make a blind bit of difference to the temperature, but it will to your back pocket . :D |

Of course it won’t make a blind bit of difference to the temperature, but it will to your back pocket. :D They all happily ignore the fact that population growth is of far bigger concern anyway. |
