1233600 2011-09-26 00:24:00 Well, it is, obviously, but this has been on the cards for well over 18 months now. The spectrum negotiations need to be cleared up by late next year, and the Maori portion of the spectrum has had this timeline for ToR for an eon. Zara Baxter (16260)
1233601 2011-09-26 02:03:00 Interesting, I wonder if the next thing will be cheaper broadband rates just because you are Maori. Iantech (16386)
1233602 2011-09-26 02:33:00 The point I am making here is that, aside from this being (re-)announced just ahead of an election, I fail to understand why this is even an item on anyone's agenda.

Broadband access/availability is not race-based. It's a commodity that anyone with disposable income can choose to obtain (unless you perhaps live on a marae out the back of beyond - but that is a personal choice)

Nga Pu Waea has developed an annual work plan and budget to maximise the ability of Maori to connect to broadband; to make broadband affordable; so Maori are encouraged to use broadband; and so they can get jobs, training and investment opportunities from the rollout project," said Dr Sharples.

Now is this quote exactly what you were asking Iantech?

1233604 2011-09-26 03:58:00 There are many people in this country of many ethnic origins who are struggling, if it is subsidised because you are a low income earner and it will help get you in a better position in life, I'm all for it. But if its subsidised because you are a particular race, I think that is very wrong. Still, its to early to see.

If they just make it more affordable for eveyone, even better still.
