2012-02-13 21:20:00 | Was getting these speeds with Slingshot ADSL2+: www.speedtest.net www.speedtest.net Had two lines with Slingshot, one naked DSL, one clothed. Both syncing at ~10mbps Signed up at 4PM with HD on Thursday to swap my Naked connection over, had confirmation back that evening to say I'd be connected Monday AM (Yesterday). Ran out on Friday to buy me a shiney new Draytek DV2750. Got home Monday and found my naked internet was off (Yuss!), popped in the new router and I was away laughing: www.speedtest.net This should also increase further when my clothed DSL connection gets disconnected, as when Slingshot put in the new Naked DSL it cut my sync speeds by 35%, so I'd anticipate it increasing further too. Turns out that although I'm only 300m away from the cabinet, my line runs right down to the other end of the street and then back again, which is a bit of a bummer, but either way I'm still happy getting significantly better than I ever have with ADSL2+. They reckon some of their customers are getting ~50mbps down which is pretty choice... Biggest improvement I notice? Uploading files, like pictures, it's honestly *instant*, no delay, it's pretty cool! Makes uploading videos from my phone a hell of a lot faster too (Well around 10x faster!) Browsing is a bit snappier too which is cool, I like that, and my wife has tested downloads from my server in the USA and in France and we still get max line speed, both peak and off-peak. She left some downloads going overnight, they didn't "go" for very long though coz they were all finished :D Well worth the money! Will try out VoIP tonight, was too sleepy last night so was in bed by like 10PM (I know right, who does that?!). Anyways just thought I'd share coz I know a few of you have been interested in it. One thing I noticed is that they advertise 30M/10M but apparently it can go faster... and 30M isn't a "You'll get this at least", so it seems a bit silly... The guy said they're not artificially slowing it in any way, shape, or form, so you get what you pay for, as fast as your line can provide it. Kinda strange to say "30M Down / 10M Up", but I'm just being pedantic. Cheers Chill.

2012-02-13 22:17:00 | According to the Chorus website the cabinet in my area was setup for VDSL2 in June 2011. :)

2012-02-13 23:48:00 | Looking good! I'm very happy with my current ADSL2+ downstream (~14Mbit) already but that 7.2Mbit upstream looks very nice....

2012-02-13 23:53:00 | Thats is nice, how much $ and what's the plan like? I get 16 down on ADSL2+ but the 1 up kinda sucks at times :) I'll check the website to see if it's available in my area. | WarNox (8772) | |
2012-02-14 02:31:00 | You had all these issues last time, and for - so far - about 4Mbps more you jumpt to HD? www.geekzone.co.nz www.geekzone.co.nz www.kiwireviews.co.nz www.webhostingreviews.co.nz Yeah we determined the disconnections aren't a fault of the ISP, it was a Chorus issue... Which sucks coz at the end of the day I switched to Slingshot, got average all around service from them and now I'm back to HD. Though, if it took that to figure that the line I *was* on was the fault, then that's fine, we've figured out that the issue was the physical *line* I was on and I'm more than happy to go back. The speeds with HD were never an issue, and for me they've been good. It just sucked coz they weren't a big enough fish to throw some weight at Chorus to get something to happen on my line when such an odd fault occurred. Yeah I've seen those reviews. Also seen some of the more recent ones on Geekzone that seem a lot more promising. Besides, it's not like an ISP has never changed their performance before ;-) So I'm willing to give them another go, especially considering their speeds have been fine and my particular fault was well out of their control. Also 19mbps > 700kbps ... almost 30X faster!

2012-02-14 07:39:00 | Turns out their new usage meter is pretty badass too, unsure when it went live, but it shows how much I've been downloading each hour (Hourly usage stats, they're pretty awesome, haven't seen that with any other ISP) ... Managed to pull down over 5GB in a single hour earlier today, not a bad effort!! :D | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
