1258894 2012-02-13 01:10:00 Hi there

As it says im after a working socket 8 AT or ATX motherboard. I hear these are quite hard to come by as the Pentium Pro was mainly used in Multi Proccessor servers and was never really very popular in the desktop market so my hopes are not high.

I have 4, 200mhz ceramic pentium pro CPUs that i pulled out of an old Dell server that i got off a mate for a few bucks many years ago (planned to turn it into a home file server but.... you know how it goes). When i got the machine (it was bloody huge and weighed a ton) it booted to windows NT server and everything worked but i tried it recently and it seems to have suffered from "Storage Rot" and no longer powers on. I decided to strip it down and the cpus and ram are all in Mint condition so i want to find a motherboard and "have a play"

The setup in the massive rack case was backplane, 2 CPU boards holding 2 proccessors each and a Memory board with 16 (!) 72pin simm slots, only 4 of which were used. so not really practical for playing around, plus the 2 power supplies were massive and designed to be hot swappable and plugged into there own backplane and rated at 700W each!

If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Kieran

P.S. yes i have already checked tradme :)

1258895 2012-02-13 06:46:00 Have you checked for failed capacitors? If they are busted, it might be an easy fix by just replacing them. Those boards would be pretty old by now! Agent_24 (57)

I think you have a business replacing same.

Yes, I do say that a lot, but that is because it's a common problem with old (and also some new) PC hardware.

Besides, in terms of aging, electrolytic capacitors are one of the worst components.

1258898 2012-02-13 10:30:00 Could well be but do you replace these as part of a business? Snorkbox (15764)
1258899 2012-02-13 11:12:00 No, I don't. I've only ever done replacements for myself or friends. Agent_24 (57)
