Holmes says successive governments refused, year after year, to officially recognise Justice Mahon’s accident report which overturned the assertions, made by the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents Ron Chippindale, that the pilots were culpable . With unassailable logic, Mahon proved him wrong . Justice Mahon’s report was eventually tabled in Parliament and became an official document in mid 1999, thanks to the efforts of Hon Maurice Williamson .

“That report absolutely clears the pilots of any blame . Yet confusion about what caused the accident remains in the minds of New Zealanders . It was to the advantage of many men in government, in Civil Aviation and in the airline that this confusion reigned for so long . Now I hope to clear it up once and for all, in a way everyone can understand .

Holmes' book Daughters of Erebus seeks to galvanise people into action .

I hope he succeeds .

Yes I seem to recall that there was fear at the time that if the Government or Air New Zealand acknowledged Judge Mahon’s findings they would open themselves up to huge claims from the families of those killed .

Surely the Statute of Limitation should have kicked in by now?

Meanwhile, back in the Bay, there has apparently been no attempt to discharge fuel oil or cargo from the stricken vessel .

I would have thought they might have tried to remove the fuel oil before the ship breaks up . Doesn’t the Navy have the Endeavour, purpose built, for this function?
Maybe it’s Tiki Touring overseas but surely there are other ways to get off as much fuel as possible . Tauranga after all is a Fuel Port with tankers coming and going all the time .

I’m pleased to see the “Oiled Wildlife Response Team” are on site . They could have plenty to do if the shiny arses don’t stop wringing their hands and get on with removing the fuel and then the cargo . They’ve had two perfect days weather wise, but have done little more than procrastinate and search for the cause .

Someone needs to explain to them that “Time is of the Essence” because the ship won’t heal itself and the present weather can’t last forever .

I’ve got a lazy dollar to say the ship will break up and we’ll have Oil and Containers everywhere .

Then we’ll have an enquiry (read cover-up) like Erebus, Cave Creek, Pike River… . and everyone will explain it wasn’t there fault . It will cost Zillions and achieve nothing, just like the others . :(

1235437 2011-10-06 22:13:00 Are there any actual pics of this oil spill? I've heard a lot of talking about it but no actual pics yet. :p

Edit - actually scratch that, there's one on stuff this morning.

Yes the Major papers have all got photos, but none of them show an “Oil Boom” surrounding the ship.

I would have thought containment might have been a consideration. :groan:

Given that the natural drift from there is usually towards Chile I guess we should leave it to the Chilean Authorities. ;)
