1235427 2011-10-05 07:23:00 So was Mt Erebus. But if the crew don't know their actual position ...

:horrified

:lol: Good grief, surely we’re not going to compare a rare sightseeing trip to Antarctica in an aeroplane with an every day occurrence in the Tauranga shipping lanes.

We’ll need to ask for directions here.

I may been a little too obtuse . All I was pointing out was that the raison d'etre of charts (nautical and aeronautical) is to plot the positions of navigational hazards . If the crew don't know the actual position of their craft relative to the hazard then there's potential for serious outcomes .

Capt Collins had one or more of the navigational waypoints switched on him without his being made aware of any changes, and with a resulting disastrous outcome .

The captain of the Tauranga-bound container ship would not deliberately steer a collision course with a charted reef, submerged or drying . Hopefully the outcome in this case will be nothing more serious than some damage to the vessel and the captain's reputation .

:D

EDIT And I hope some of the pressure building for an exoneration of Jim Collins will build momentum with a successful conclusion .

1235430 2011-10-05 20:04:00 The indications from what has been said, is that Met has a good chance of improving his lot, so all is not lost. Cicero (40)
1235431 2011-10-05 20:38:00 Hmm. Liberian-registered ship, but Greek-owned. Someone is trying to cut costs. Hardly surprising there has been an incident johcar (6283)

I agree Wal .

A relative on my wife’s side flew one trip down there and reckoned it was a nightmare . The normal capabilities of the plane were severely compromised by the cold and you were expected to take the passengers sight seeing to boot .

He also swears Collins was the safest pilot he ever flew with .

I think Judge Peter Mahon summed that one up very well when he accused Air New Zealand of an "Orchestrated Litany of Lies . "

But I thought Collins had been exonerated of any fault, if he hasn’t then I agree he should be .

However, this grounding on the Astrolabe is going to take a hell of a lot of explaining .

Actually, hitting it was a feat in itself as the width of a football field either side they would have been fine . I do however draw some comfort from the fact that had they missed the reef and continued their merry way they may well have wound up on my back lawn .

I just wish they’d leave the Blame Game until the Ship, Cargo, and Fuel were salvaged . ;)

1235433 2011-10-06 06:14:00 B.M. Unfortunately the issue is still somewhat alive:

Holmes says successive governments refused, year after year, to officially recognise Justice Mahon’s accident report which overturned the assertions, made by the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents Ron Chippindale, that the pilots were culpable. With unassailable logic, Mahon proved him wrong. Justice Mahon’s report was eventually tabled in Parliament and became an official document in mid 1999, thanks to the efforts of Hon Maurice Williamson.

“That report absolutely clears the pilots of any blame. Yet confusion about what caused the accident remains in the minds of New Zealanders. It was to the advantage of many men in government, in Civil Aviation and in the airline that this confusion reigned for so long. Now I hope to clear it up once and for all, in a way everyone can understand.”

Snip from Paul Holmes wants clear Justice (www.scoop.co.nz)

Holmes' book Daughters of Erebus seeks to galvanise people into action.

I hope he succeeds.
