Even the original ka mate was a joke. The mighty Te Rauparaha trembles in his jandals (ka mate = I die, I die), taking refuge behind the skirts of the local chief's wife, who then dispatches those giving Te R a bad time ("bugger off, you nasty 'orrible little men").
