1235529 2011-10-05 21:33:00 This morning on "Breakfast" there were people complaining of the lack of local support for high priced restaurants on the Wharf in Auckland. What planet do they come from? Don't they realize that the Kiwi working man is struggling to make ends meet through lack of work, and has far more to to worry about than supporting the lackeys of the Rugby machine. My work, electrical repairs, is down by 75% compared to the same time in the last five years.

Of course they could take it off TV, the fans would have to go and watch it, and we could watch something decent for a change.

1235530 2011-10-05 22:17:00 A lot of the prices down there seem to have crept up in recent months, too, while quality has dropped. Get stuffed if they expect me to support their attempts to rip us off. inphinity (7274)

1235532 2011-10-06 01:29:00 Not just restaurants, loads of shops.
Trades too, mentioned that ages ago, boo sucks for rugby, just a big expensive entertainment for some, and a loss of income for the rest

I've been faithfully supporting my local Asian takeaway for ages. Eating some right now. They always seem busy here.

It's either them, the booze, or my chronic lack of exercise that is to thank for my steadily expanding waistline.

In this world where we blame everyone else for our failings, perhaps I should complain and insist that they pay for my new (bigger) pants and belts.

But back to the rugby and the shops...

I can't think of anything worse than having to mingle with a bunch of pissed rugby-heads. They're notorious a-holes at the best of times, but when drunk and in their thousands... I'm happy to be far, far away from them.

Win or lose, you can bet on a good deal of drunken violence the night the AB's finish their involvement in the competition. The violence will be either a result of defeated kiwi hopes, or a result of foreign guests getting p'd off with the kiwi gloating in the event of a finals victory.

Wives and GF's be warned, it's been proven that a male fans sexual prowess goes up and down with the victories and losses of the teams he supports.
If the ABs lose... expect a week or more of even more mediocre attention...
If the AB's win... expect to be disappointed even more often by his short performance in the week that follows.

Either way girls, you lose! :devil

1235538 2011-10-06 08:31:00 This is a little OT, but I agree with the previous sentiments about the economy and the impact on small business.

Listening to NewstalkZB's Danny Watson yesterday when returning to Auckland, I heard a [first time ] caller from Northland saying local businesses were making money hand over fist with the influx of tourists, and couldn't complain.

I can identify with that. With the major RWC fixtures being at the weekends, no visitor is going to hang around one of our biggest, rip off, dreariest city-without-a soul wanting to spend their cash in largely second rate shops, in a "Main Street" of cheap tourist import shops and $2 crap. Mayor Brown needs to take a look see as to how Queen Street is becoming another Otara Market. Restaurants charging largely inflated prices for second rate fare, and supported with cheap hired help. So they (rightly so) head off off in search of the Real New Zild.

For a tourist, few cities in Australasia have nothing to offer once offerings of the standard tourist fare have been exhausted. Sunday to Thursday our cities are in snooze mode. They only awaken like a bear with a sore head on Thursday, start to become fully awake on Fridays, and are hopefully in full swing by Saturday night.

Auckland is not one of these cities.

Sunday mornings (and for that matter Sundays) are the same the world over. Be it London, New York, Sydney, Auckland or Ekatahuna (or even Gaborone), it's Snooze Time, guys!.

I'm intrigued as to how these restauranteurs were able to overestimate the demand in the first place. Those who stocked up on high priced four figure wines, gourmet offerings, silver service, all in anticipation of an easy kill just didn't know their client base. Overnight, Auckland was never going to be transformed into a Monte Carlo, a Las Vegas, or a New York.

Back to our Northland First Time Caller, they got it right. Their patrons escaped the dreary midweek life that any Australasian city offers, and headed to the real us.

:)
