1469215 2020-06-02 02:41:00 We have a calendar from our grandson's primary school that has all the days of the week and months of the year in maori.:groan: It seems as though they think (and are teaching the children) that the maoris had days, weeks and months all named long before Captain Cook arrived. Astonishingly their days weeks and months were exactly the same as the Europeans but with moari names.:tui:

Obviously they didn't, someone just made up those so called maori words. Why is it necessary to have the days and months in made up maori names? Where do they get these silly ideas from?:illogical

It gets sillier
Originally, Maori words for the weekdays were bastardized versions of the Eng words of the days . Just as our Eng words for the days are bastardized from other languages

Nope, that wasnt good enough. So they ( Māori Language Commission) came up with new 100% Maori names , based on the planet the day was associated with .

At least English Language happily accepts words from other languages . Why re-invent the wheel when a word is commonly in use .

"The days of the week in Māori above are now the traditional / official names used (and promoted) by the Māori Language Commission. At the time of the first missionaries in New Zealand, Māori used transliterations of the English names for the days of the week"

1469217 2020-06-02 06:19:00 I notice that the Matamata - Piako Council has done this crap to their recycling calendar this year. At least they still have the English names for the months as well but who know about next year.. paulw (1826)

And they didn't?
Modern humans were not the ones who figured out how long a year is or how many months lunar or otherwise there are.

As for "made-up" maori words, must all languages be static?
What the hell is english? Old english, middle english, modern english. Modern english is a mish mash of stolen words from other languages.
And what is this:

Oh yeah....new words. Guess we made them up OMG.

1469220 2020-06-03 08:08:00 You will find that many civilisations had their own ways of telling a time. The fact that the majority of the world can agree on a standard is great but you will find that culturally they still celebrate important dates like their own new years.

It's not like we know an exact phase of the sun, moon, planets, stars or the earth that determines when an actual new year starts but most civilations did determine their start and end based off certain seasons.

Not all maori had the same calendar, some tribes had 10 to 13 lunar months. And their months were described based on what was happening around them. The end of the year was always harvesting time which again many civilisations had this harvest moon cycle. Which as we know, the world shares different seasons, so a different end of year for them.

There is a lot of similarities around the world, so to say maori never had this is incorrect. They just had to accept the modern day, like the rest of the world has.

The calendar we have accepted is not accurate and I am not sure if we will still be around to see when they fix its flaw but this just shows that maybe we can not rely on a fixed time frame but for now this calendar is working so every language out there will have their own words for these days and months. Not just the maori.

HERE (en.wikipedia.org) you go, take your pick. :D

It's not just different names for the same days, there seems to be quite different days, months and years and over 40 to choose from.
