1464239 2019-10-02 08:19:00 Hi all,

I have an HP netbook that is around six years old and a couple of years ago it was almost drowned when I tipped a glass of water over the table . After drying it out it booted up fine and has worked well ever since except for one issue, a very noisy fan .

I'd like to fix this noisy fan and took the cover off to have a look at it . The fan won't spin freely when given a nudge, unlike my desktop PC fans - should it do so? It spins quietly when the netbook is switched on then after about a minute, presumably when the machine heats up, it revs up and becomes considerably noisier . Prior to the water spill it was quiet . There doesn't seem to be any way of adding a drop of oil to it so I have decided to replace it .

My question is whether I am actually on the right track? How would the water spill have caused this? There is no sign of rust or anything else that would cause it to be noisy so I'm at a loss as to why it is . I have no problem with replacing the fan if that fixes the issue, I just want reassurance that I am not barking up the wrong tree .

1464240 2019-10-02 12:13:00 It sounds like the fan bearing has just worn out. It's common for desktop fans to wear out and make more noise as they get older, so it's just the same for laptop fans too I suppose. Although you say there doesn't seem to be any way of adding a drop of oil, once you remove the fan it might be possible to oil it. I doubt the water would have affected it but I guess it's possible if the bearing isn't a sealed unit. Rod J (451)
1464241 2019-10-02 17:25:00 If you can get it out try something like Driglide which is for door locks and is not an oil, available at Mitre10 and all good hardware stores gary67 (56)

1464243 2019-10-02 20:45:00 Fan could be faulty, but then again may not. Laptop fans don't spin as freely as a Desktop fan. If you flick a laptop Fan they normally spin a few times (no more than a second) then stop, almost "springy".

If its quiet when first starting it could also be over heating soon after. As the Laptops get hotter the fans spin faster. Seen simply resetting the BIOS back to defaults solve a over speed fan as well, sometimes the sensors get all screwed up and report its hotter than it actually is.

Are the vents (exhaust and intakes) completely clear ?? If you remove them you should be able to look right through them. Seen MANY vents full of dust but look clean at first.

You need to check the Temp to see what heat is being built up. You can download various programs, some listed www.maketecheasier.com

Just look when installing as some have "extras" included that need to be unticked, Eg: Core Temp. (its easy enough to untick the options.)

Also look in the Task Manager, look to see if the CPU, Memory and /or Disk are running at high capacity if they are that means its working hard and needs more cooling.

I have no problem with replacing the fan if that fixes the issue, I just want reassurance that I am not barking up the wrong tree. NOBODY can guarantee that its actually the fan without testing before hand, unless its something obvious.

Seen noisy fans before , cleanout the dust and crap along with stopping the overheating ( heat-sink paste had gone bad) and they go quiet.

1464244 2019-10-02 22:58:00 Thanks all for the helpful replies . I can get the fan out so I'll check it again to see if it can be oiled but I'll look at wainuitech's suggestions first . From the sound of it I suspect that the bearings have gone .

That describes it very well - it's springy so it's good to know that is normal .

Now that's something I'll look into . I can't see how it could be overheating that quick as the noise starts up within a minute of the machine being switched on .

It's virtually squeaky clean, no dust, vents look clear but I'll check again just in case .

This mini laptop came with Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10 . Since then, because it only gets used occasionally, Windows now spends a lot of time updating itself every time it is used so yes, there is a lot going on in the background as shown in Task Manager . I try and remember to switch it on every few weeks for it to "catch up" but forget more often than not until it is required again . Despite this I still think it shouldn't be making the racket that it does as it doesn't stop even when the updates are all done and nothing else is going on . Anyway, I'll check the temperature and the other things suggested . Thanks again .

1464245 2019-11-11 03:19:00 Hi all, just to provide an update to the situation, replacing the fan made little difference, the machine is still noisy. If a new fan hasn't fixed is it possibly the hard drive that is making the din?

After first starting the netbook it is quiet until Windows 10 is loading then the noise ramps up and stays that way. It doesn't seem to matter whether the PC is busy or not, it still makes the din but it will go quiet if allowed to go to sleep after being left alone a while. Just to reiterate, it wasn't this noisy prior to getting a bit wet underneath a couple of years ago.

Also, I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive with an SSD drive. I don't have an installation disc for Windows 7 which was originally on it and as there is no DVD drive would I be able to copy Win 7 from a DVD onto a USB stick and install onto a new SSD from there? I don't want to clone the current drive and I'm not sure of the procedure for booting from a USB that has Win 7 copied onto it.
