1464316 2019-10-25 00:06:00 You're probably aware, but you'll void the 4 year warranty if you use non-genuine cartridges on the Brother. Per page they are pretty cheap to run, use the genuine cartridges while the printer is under warranty at least. wratterus (105)

Wrong.
Consumers generally are aware of the above reasoning on non-genuine or third party inks and warranty conditions, as it does not apply only to Epson and has been regularly covered in the media. A recent example can be found on the web pages of TVNZ's fairgo program, where three major inkjet manufacturers - Epson, Canon and HP - all responded to questions about warranty coverage and, as quoted on the web page:

The key message is that using "non-genuine" ink won't by itself void your warranty. However, if damage to your printer is shown to be caused by that ink, then it's likely you'll have to pay for repairs.

tvnz.co.nz

the Advertiser made a claim that was both false and in breach of legislation. In particular, that if a non genuine ink cartridge was used in an Epson printer, the warranty would be void.

The Chairman directed the Complaints Board to consider the complaint with reference to Rule 2 of the Code of Ethics. This required the Complaints Board to consider whether the advertisement contained any statement which directly or by implication was misleading or deceptive or likely to deceive or mislead the consumer.

The Complaints Board referred to the relevant wording in the advertisement and the context in which it was used. It noted the sign that stated, “Non Genuine Ink Cartridge Route”, and the underlying claims – “Void Warranty - Damaged Printer”. In the Complaints Board’s opinion these claims were absolute. If a non genuine ink cartridge was used, it would damage the printer and, similarly, if a non genuine ink cartridge was used, it would void the warranty. In other words there was only one interpretation the consumer could take from these claims.

1464318 2019-10-25 00:27:00 Well sure, if the issue is not related to the cartridge, then Brother will generally cover it. We've seen so many issues caused by third party cartridges over the years that we'd never recommend using them on an expensive or new printer. As the printer gets a bit older, perhaps it's worth taking the risk to save a few $$. wratterus (105)
1464319 2019-10-25 00:35:00 Wrong.

Nope. He's correct
The 4year warranty, is a warranty upgrade .
Only available IF you use genuine Brother ink.

Thats quite separate from what you'll get through a CGA claim though. :)
But Retailers and manufacturers will fight you every step of the way with a CGA claim .

It could be argued that any "1 year warranty" is a breach of the CGA , simply by claiming that you are limited to 1 year : Retailers are not allowed to mislead you re CGA rights
CGA : is it near worthless since its not strictly enforced ?

Thats what happens when you buy bottom of the barrel cheap & nasties. Unfortunately the market is now flooded with crappy cheap imports .

And you can save more than a few $, from as low as 25c(inkjet) each to import . Compared to $45 each for genuine.
Can be $180+ to replace all 4 inkjet carts . You'd have to be insane to pay that :)

1464321 2019-10-25 06:16:00 Our printer is at least 5 years old and have been using toner from Computerfood for the last 2 years and always used their ink before that when we had injets. They have always performed well for us. gary67 (56)

I have had a few. It all depends who you talk to. Staff, yes they try.
managers, they know better and won't argue.

1464323 2019-10-26 22:15:00 Personally I wont touch refilled or compatible cartridges /toners anymore.

Twice had nothing but problems. One particular Business class HP Printer, wouldn't run on anything but genuine HP cartridges.

Another Brother Black Laser - got a Compatible toner from Computerfood, lasted three prints then heard this "POP" WTF !! Turned around looked at the printer and a nice cloud of toner floating through the air - oh great, cartridge burst

Ever tried completely cleaning out blown toner from a laser, toner goes everywhere. Since then only used genuine toners and never a problem.

1464324 2019-11-15 05:25:00 I have been using the Brother printer quite a bit since bought it, like it very much. :)

One question: Is there a way to check the toner level so that I can buy a spare toner in case it runs out when I need to print something urgently. My previous HP has got the utility tool software to monitor the ink level.

Couldn't find anything similar in this Brother Utility tool.

1464325 2019-11-15 05:27:00 When you get a warning from the Brother it will still have a fair bit of printing left in it so just wait for the warning gary67 (56)
