1259668 2012-02-17 20:36:00 Hello,
Foiled again by technology. I want to backup my laptop to an external HDD but whether I try running Window 7's automatic Backup feature or manually try to copy folders out of My Documents, I keep getting an error called "Error 0x8007045D - I/O Device error" a few minutes into the copying process.
The hard drive I am using is less than two years old (WD 500Gb). I have run check disc on the laptop which came up clean but I have not been able to run it on the HDD. I suppose I will just have to get a new hdd and try again. The thing that annoys me is that my existing WD hdd has only ever been used for backing up and spent the rest of it's life in a dry cupboard out of the sun etc. Dont see why it should be useless already.

Does anyone know if the error code relates to the laptop or the hdd attached to it? Or could it be either?

Thanks.

What you need to do is locate where the actual problem is. Easiest way to do this, would be to attach the external HDD to another computer and see if you can copy over files, if you can then the problem should be on the laptop.

FYI-- Doesn't matter that the drive is two years old, drives can and do fail at any time, with any amount of use.

Edited: Have a read of This here (www.mydigitallife.info) May or may not relate, since you didn't currently supply the laptop specs.

Its also possible its a registry problem.
