1235940 2011-10-10 02:07:00 Well the Torrey Canyon seems like a good example of what happens when Governments take charge.

Don’t know if you can really blame the Wilson Government because given that we are talking 1700 tons as opposed to over 100,000 tons of oil, that the ship was breaking up and all salvage attempts had failed. Bombing and burning it was about the only remaining option.

Should we need to do likewise, I wonder who we’ll ask?

But, just think of the Carbon Tax that would have been incurred. :)

1235941 2011-10-10 18:13:00 Now the spin doctors are telling us that the response so far has been on "one of the fastest in the world!"

Then you see some limp idiot on tv last night saying they are testing the oil and the dispersant they are using.

Surely they know by now to use Dispersant A on fuel oil. Dispersant B on bunker oil and Dispersant C on diesel etc.

And the authorities (the PM, the local Mayor, Maritime NZ etc etc) are starting to react to crirtisms and suggestions from the public.
Well the deserve it for doing nothing for 5 fine days.
Now they will blame the weather.

1235943 2011-10-10 19:08:00 If they transfer the rest of the Fuel oil off and we get a weather change around to the Southwest,we should see a dramatic decline in the oil on the Beach with just the residual stuff that has been missed appearing with each tide

Only hope the ship stays together as it will be a long process to get it off the Astrolabe

1235944 2011-10-10 20:55:00 Has anyone read any comments about whether this particular ship has previously
called at Tauranga....?

1235945 2011-10-10 21:21:00 Now at 10am Tuesday they say the ship may be breaking up.
The crew has sent a mayday call asking to be taken off

So a spokeswoman (dur) from Marine NZ said its only a "procedural thing"

So where is the nearest helicopter ?

The defence force are responding with a "multi-facted extraction operation"

Lucky we are not going to war with this lot in charge !

1235946 2011-10-11 22:30:00 It have just been explained to me that the delay in getting a salvage underway earlier was that the person in charge, the CEO of Maritime NZ, is a charted accountant and wouldn’t know a plimsoll from a gunwale.

I find it quite unbelievable that we follow on from the Pike River rescue, which was run by a Booze Bus Bobbie, where absolutely nothing was achieved, to a maritime disaster where again nothing will be achieved and again the person in charge has no experience in what they are dealing with.

On top of this, I believe we are still paying Jenny Shipley $1000 a day for her expertise in the reconstruction of Christchurch. I wonder what expertise that would be, given that her main claim to fame was the INSIS Computer debacle which cost the tax payer $100m and never got off the ground.

However, returning to our maritime disaster, I take comfort from the fact that Hone Key has given the ocean and foreshore to the Maoris, so problem no belong me. :D

:D

"The vessel went aground early 5th and salvors were already appointed and their first staff on board the vessel sometime before mid afternoon the next day so there was no delay whatsoever. "

There was someone from the salvage company on radio this morning saying that a floating crane with high enough reach is on its way from Singapore as "you can't start unloading from the bottom of the stack" Unfortunately the crane will take several weeks to get here.

Edit Many of the containers that have fallen off are empty.
