Don't the Dutch just get someone to poke a finger into a leaking hole?

What a jolly good idea. Apparently it worked with the Dykes. Problem is he may need a huge finger to plug this hole.

1235911 2011-10-08 02:38:00 Maybe he's thinking about using these to soak up the oil ...

1235913 2011-10-08 03:25:00 Seems containers have been seen moving...need to hurry to get some off. But even with helicopters, won't weight distribution per container need be factored in/or calculated for efficient removal and transport? kahawai chaser (3545)
1235914 2011-10-08 03:37:00 Mil 26's are available on charter from Belgium.
Just get them here.
Then lift a few containers off one side.
Then a few from the other side.

Its not rocket science.

A floating crane would take months to get here. Even if it had a low draught.

Which is the container with the wine in it ?
It would be my bad luck for it to be at the bottom of a pile.

I wouldn't trust these buggers as far as I could kick them
Who cares about a little natural oil made from dead animals in the sea. When I was at sea we would say: "take this flipper" as we dumped stuff overboard and pumped out the oil from the bilges.
Thousands of tons of the stuff in the Gulf of Mexico a few months ago and now its all gone because its dead dinosaurs etc and the oil naturally seeps into the sea in some places. When I saw the Arizona a few years ago at Pearl a big bubble of FFO came up as I was standing there and none cared.

1235916 2011-10-08 04:22:00 As I said in another post I’ve fished that reef for years and if the grounded ship is where I think it is by looking at the pictures (and I’m 90% sure), the reef drops almost straight down on the ships Port side.

I think you’ll find that the Port side is almost afloat and the stern is, which is going to cause major problems as a swell starts to come through and the ship starts rocking and rolling.

I note that the Navel Supply ship Endeavour is available and on standby. Why the hell it isn’t on site beats me. It’s designed to transfer fuel in large quantities and could almost Raft up on the Port side. Even if it couldn’t quite raft up there is a vehicle barge that travels between Omokoroa and Matakana Island that could act as an intermediately with a tank on it if necessary.

So much could have been tried and even if it failed at least you gave it a go. You couldn’t make things worse than they have.

To this end I can’t for the life of me see why the local Harbour Board Tugs weren’t in place waiting for the High tide on Wednesday afternoon to attempt to pull it off the reef. I think they would have also had the benefit of the ships main motor and may well have got it off. Even if they didn’t have the grunt, at least they would have tried.

That was their window of opportunity, now long gone.

But no, the shiny arses started the Blame Game and duck shoving whose responsibility it was. Pike River and Ch Ch all over again.

But wait, they’ll be an enquiry! :groan:

I dont think the small amount of fuel on board is a problem what they need to do is to heli lift the containers off the ship and onto a barge. Then float the ship off.
