1236323 2011-10-08 22:55:00 . . . I always use 2 stroke mix in a 4 stroke mower, that way there is no danger of using straight petrol in a 2stroke which is disastrous.
For safety, always use water instead of those dangerously flammable petrol mixes. ;)

If it is a foam filter, it is supposed to have some oil impregnated into it (the oil captures the dirt, the foam catches almost nothing), squeeze it out if there's too much (you dont need a new one, but if you do, oil it before you put it in); if it's paper, it must be dry.

The main reason why it started when you removed it, is you increased the air flow thus countering the flooded state (you do something similar by opening the throttle fully in a flooded carbureted car engine).

Excellent diagnosis then, on your part.

1236329 2011-10-09 02:07:00 How did you/your wife get oil onto a dry paper air filter? That would sure make it flood just the same as having the choke permanently on :) CliveM (6007)

Dunno, i think she tipped it upside down/on its side to try and wash the underside of the machine

1236331 2011-10-09 02:52:00 I managed to cause a failure of a lawnmower this morning after trying to hose cat piss off the thing, thus the sparkplug and lead got wet, must have been shorting and didn't work.

Drying it made it work again.

How exciting...

I hadnt told her at the time about the little attachment on the top of the blade housing that allows you to wash the blades without turning it over.
