1235728 2011-10-10 01:40:00 There are other states that have no sales tax, and some even no state income tax either.

Mostly, Montana is prolly 99% Republican, totally conservative and a CCW state too like Arizona and Texas where you can wear a gun in a holster, either hidden or out in the open in the whole state.

Most citizens - of which there are less than one million in Montana - are avid members of the NRA and have hunting and fishing licenses and are either big ranchers with many heads of cattle or they are the employees of such land barons.

The speed limits flaunt the Federal limits by about 10 MPH and even though there is no sales or income tax, the roads are all well-paved and are in a constant flux of repaving and full replacement all the time, not just dribbling some hot oil and sand in the cracks like California.

The welfare system in Montana is well intact too, but there are seriously fewer abusers of the system.

There ARE some 'tourist taxes' in place for Californians who venture across the state line, but the locals don't get hit with it. These are set up by the individual cities and towns that have nothing to do with the state itself. These taxes and fees may be as high as 5-8% or so, but they aren't near as bad as the usual 'everybody's screwed' taxes in California and other socialist states.

I guess youse guys find it kinda strange that individual states can practice such autonomy. But it happens here with the state's rights and the attempted interventions by the White House of current and there's an always-on struggle to vet the state's individuality without federal interventions or lack of monies in matching funds for highways and parks/reserves areas.

Since Nevada and Arizona and Montana have such staunchly conservative standards and elected officials, they can merrily thumb their noises at the Feds and keep them out and away from the bargaining table where the dole is rife with 'conditions' and 'capitulations' of the socialist order.

If the Feds can't say that a state 'owes' them for favors rendered (read: money and materials provided to assist the state and help it build highways, bridges and other infrastructure), then they cannot force a state to bend over and be sodomized by rules and regulations.

I like the gun laws there, would love to have them here in NZ and the ability to shoot criminals in your house

1235730 2011-10-10 01:54:00 It sounds like California is doing its part of paying taxes but Montana isnt.... how does one state get away with that when others dont??

It's a matter of need.

If a state needs Federal intervention in matching funds or materials to assist in governing itself, then there are strings.

Montana is entirely self-sufficient thanks to it's lush, verdant forests and wood industries, gold and silver and it's other precious metal .

Federal doles are not needed and have never been needed, so full autonomy exists and a general nose-thumbing takes place when the Feds want to get it's claws into the state coffers and potential taxable base. The state of Montana has never taken a dime from the Feds for anything and they are therefor exempt of intervention and fiddling with the balance that Montana has achieved.

SIDEBAR:: IF Montana had any stick-n-mortar businesses involved in interstate commerce (as the latest roll-over that California forced on the internet sales) then the individual would have to pay the appropriate taxes to the state from which the goods came.

Of course, Montana won't divulge the names or addresses of those who buy online, nor if they were somehow known, interstate subpoenas would be ignored by Montana as they should be and be they'd be protected by the state.

Only criminal activity is allowed the process of extradition.

1235732 2011-10-10 02:04:00 Isnt Phoenix Arizona a tax haven?

I'd be inclined to say: NO.

Phoenix has been Californicated to the worst way. Although personal income taxes are almost non-existent, most retirees are tax-exempt anyway, so that's a moot point.

Actually, Phoenix is almost as bad as California in it's needing to milk the retirees for their taxable monies. Sales taxes there are about as Maudlin as SoCal, and there's the smog too. It has a crowded base of many non-taxable persons who just consume and don't give back. That's why Phoenix is in such turmoil at the moment.

Overcrowding of negative cash flow retirees always puts a strain on the local economy, and causes a lot of friction between 'the natives' and the 'non-indigenous' persons who find it a good place to live, albeit very smoggy now.

Many parts of Arizona are tax-free or tax-exempt - NOTE THE DIFFERENCE HERE! - and there is an ongoing re-consideration of local taxes and even a statewide excise and consumptive-based tax now.

The Northern parts of Arizona are most like Montana in that it is totally self sufficient with it's wood and paper industries and the Indians foresting their native lands to a terrific positive cash flow. It's marvelous what someone can do with a renewable resource and good management.

So - even IF Phoenix is currently a good hidey-hole for a tax free existence, it's in a serious flux now and there MAY be sales taxes in it's near future. Democrats are creeping in and that's not good.

1235733 2011-10-10 02:09:00 Nice photos

My wife is the one who took them. I only edited, cropped and sweetened them a little, that's all.

I too think there's a lot of very beautiful land to be seen here in the US. Every state and every season have something wonderful to explore and experience.
