Where I am living right now is about as far from the ocean as I've ever lived .

I loved Huntington (Surf City) Beach, and of course being a Navy brat, I lived near the ocean for all my previous life . Funny --- my sinuses were always clogged and I had incredibly bad headaches all my younger years too . Coincidence? I think not .

Living as far inland as I do now, and plan to in the future, my headaches have abated and I can breath through my (formidable) nose .

But - yeah - the brick building were kinda a culture shock for me as they don't existing in EQ-Land, here in SoCal .

The weather can get somewhat colder (0ºF and a tad below) in Winter, but the snow's about the same as here at 4-feet, collectively over the whole season - so that;s not much different .

Food prices are about the same, although the quality it yards ahead and the biggest thing is that there's NO sales tax on anything . That automatically gives me about a 10-12% income increase .

Add in the reduced rent and the lower profile of the roads that don't twist and turn and wind around the mountains instead of like Montana where they go through them, and the tire wear and mechanical abuse and tear and gas consumption goes 'way down on my cars .

The area is protected by The Bitterroot Mountains on the West, so the prevailing weather fronts either go around or over them and leave the valley less impacted, and lots less wind too . The Bitterroot River runs through and crosses over the whole area repeatedly and there are hundreds if not thousands of tributaries and streams all over the place full of trout and Dolly Varden and even a few salmon running through there in season .

BIG shopping at major stores is available at less than 40-miles away in Missoula, which is about 17 miles closer than what we have available to us here where we have to go 57 miles to Temecula or 59 miles to Hemet - and here it's over those nasty mountain roads that kill or maim about 100 drivers/passengers yearly on the ice and snow or in the fog .

Travel there, like I mentioned - is on very straight roads that rise and fall slowly instead of the 9-10% inclines we have here .

What are the pole climbing characters for?

Why does the driving mirror point out the passenger door?

1235724 2011-10-10 00:19:00 The two guys on the antenna (NZ= wire thing-y) are the 'Der Wienerschnitzel ( . wordpress . com/2011/06/02/" target="_blank">lamarwalter . wordpress . com)' advertising characters .

They're hotdogs and they are running for their life . ( . gstatic . com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT-fB5bzmsrbJy9dagjg7blkhMhKZ1ZBZtR99ezCmWX17BlUXXXDu" target="_blank">t3 . gstatic . com XdzpjN)

It's an advertising gimmick that my wife wanted on her antenna to distinguish her van from the others in a big parking lot (NZ= car park) .

1235725 2011-10-10 00:22:00 Odd no sales tax in Montana. I got notified from Amazon about sales tax deals implemented in US states. Might happen if online store Amazon moves in to set up a distribution center. There's current discussion in Tenessese (www.publicnewsservice.org) and Connecticut. (online.wsj.com) This after a sales tax deal in California. Amazon could seriously have an effect on any small brick and mortar stores if they set up in Montana depending on the state's current legislation.

Surely no sales tax, might mean something is missing or lacking, e.g. minimal amenities or infrastructure. Then again may not be required in the big sky country.

1235726 2011-10-10 00:58:00 There are other states that have no sales tax, and some even no state income tax either .

Mostly, Montana is prolly 99% Republican, totally conservative and a CCW state too like Arizona and Texas where you can wear a gun in a holster, either hidden or out in the open in the whole state .

Most citizens - of which there are less than one million in Montana - are avid members of the NRA and have hunting and fishing licenses and are either big ranchers with many heads of cattle or they are the employees of such land barons .

The speed limits flaunt the Federal limits by about 10 MPH and even though there is no sales or income tax, the roads are all well-paved and are in a constant flux of repaving and full replacement all the time, not just dribbling some hot oil and sand in the cracks like California .

The welfare system in Montana is well intact too, but there are seriously fewer abusers of the system .

There ARE some 'tourist taxes' in place for Californians who venture across the state line, but the locals don't get hit with it . These are set up by the individual cities and towns that have nothing to do with the state itself . These taxes and fees may be as high as 5-8% or so, but they aren't near as bad as the usual 'everybody's screwed' taxes in California and other socialist states .

I guess youse guys find it kinda strange that individual states can practice such autonomy . But it happens here with the state's rights and the attempted interventions by the White House of current and there's an always-on struggle to vet the state's individuality without federal interventions or lack of monies in matching funds for highways and parks/reserves areas .

Since Nevada and Arizona and Montana have such staunchly conservative standards and elected officials, they can merrily thumb their noises at the Feds and keep them out and away from the bargaining table where the dole is rife with 'conditions' and 'capitulations' of the socialist order .

If the Feds can't say that a state 'owes' them for favors rendered (read: money and materials provided to assist the state and help it build highways, bridges and other infrastructure), then they cannot force a state to bend over and be sodomized by rules and regulations .

1235727 2011-10-10 01:38:00 It sounds like California is doing its part of paying taxes but Montana isnt.... how does one state get away with that when others dont?? Gobe1 (6290)
