1235959 2011-10-12 06:35:00 you can't unload from the bottom of the stack??:waughh::waughh::waughh:

No, you can't.
Containers are "locked" top and bottom to the one below and the one above.
I know because I've been around the world 2 1/2 times by container ship. The crew have to check that the locking mechanism is engaged when loading and unlatch the mechanism when unloading. In extreme conditions when the list gets too big the locking mechanism can fail.

1235960 2011-10-12 08:37:00 Just heard a interesting view from a retired marine engineer on radio live, regarding why the fuel/containers weren't removed from the ship. If the ship is not unloaded evenly the structure is likely to bend and break up(which it now has). And that a lot of the fuel carried on board these vessels is actually used as ballast and while been used as ballast it is in such a state that it can't be pumped until heated. So if you started off loading from one end without shifting fuel(that can't be shifted), likely result is ship breaking up.
Hey could be all BS, but sounds plausible enough for me.

1235961 2011-10-12 09:12:00 I heard a marine salvage expert on RadioNZ say the exact same thing about the fuel oil, that unless its kept heated its very difficult to pump. martynz (5445)

1235963 2011-10-12 10:37:00 So Winston how do you explain them trying to do now what should have been done days ago?

Did their lawyer discover that a country has every right to deal with a threat to shipping and environment within its territorial waters?

Now just imagine if a similar scenario were to occur in the English Channel.

Can you see the situation being allowed to develop there as it has here?

We could all blame the French lol

1235964 2011-10-12 10:44:00 Yeah HFO needs to be heated to over 100C for it to flow. Netsukeninja (13296)
1235965 2011-10-12 10:44:00 I’ll attach a cross section which shows how steep the reef is and how little was actually stuck.

As much as I don't have your delusions of expertise, That picture shows a huge portion of the ship on the reef, The weight bearing down and the force required to move it would be massive.

The forces at play in all directions would be of a scale hard to comprehend, as would the expected repercussions from adding new forces or altering conditions.

1235966 2011-10-12 11:03:00 Probably more than an accountant and a Snotbox.

Anyway, being President of the Procrastinators and Handwringers League what do you suggest?

I know enough not to bother to suggest anything.

1235967 2011-10-12 15:07:00 Was in the mount yesterday and had a look at the Beach 1 Km from the Mount, quite a few people with various tools for removal of the oil

There was no official people to be seen and asked a few people if they were part of the cleanup, everyone was there in there on right to remove the oil from their backyard themselves so I am going to join in today myself and when ever I can from now on (I live 30k away)

Afraid that this stuff is going to be around for years,it has the consistency of thick Molasses and once it hits the sand it adheres to it tripling it's weight so it stays there and if not removed it will be covered up in the next tide the stuff that was not in lumps was a Beer brown scum and oily

With the wind change it will stop heading to the Mount/Papamoa beaches and around but will no doubt end up on some other bit of coastline North or south of the source

Seen over the years that the sand moves around a fair bit so it will be continently exposing the stuff with each Easterly weather system that comes through

Holiday makers are going to give the Mount second thoughts as a holiday spot this year as they won't want to expose their kids to this stuff in the sand and people that have dogs with them on the beach will think twice as well

1235968 2011-10-12 18:03:00 Yeah HFO needs to be heated to over 100C for it to flow.

The indignant residents of the Bay need to file that away for reference should they decide to tar and feather the captain. :D
