Thanks very much for all your help, I would not have known what to do without your assistance. The mystery remains about what happened to change the system but I have found after changing my OS from Windows 3.11 to the latest version of Windows95 early last year (completely newly installed, not upgraded), that I had more crashes, frozen screens etc. and having to use ScanDisk than ever before!!(Talking about being more stable than the previous OS!).
