3637 1999-12-16 16:42:00 I'm on my third warranty replacement Dynalink 56k modem. The other two died in a month each under identical circumstances - they started dropping out all the time, then they started making a noise like frying eggs, the way old carbon granule telephone earpieces used to, then they stopped working. The phone line works fine with the regular phone or my sister's laptop PCMCIA modem, which has never had any problems. The computer shop hinted that there was some revision coming out for Dynalinks that fixed problems experienced by people who lived very near telephone exchanges, like me. On a hunch I put a 600 ohm resistor in series which each of my modem jack wires (Don't tell Telecom!)to limit the line current and this seems to have cured the problem. Two months later, modem No. 3 is working just fine, connecting at top speed, etc., but I don't like having to sneak around behind Telecom's back. Any suggestions? Nothing on the Dynalink website helped, and yes, I unplugged the other gear on the phone line before I plugged the modem in right from day 1. My sister doesn't even bother to do that - her laptop modem works fine even with a phone, answering machine and Fax hanging off the line at the same time. Why?
Cheers
