| 3712 | 2000-01-04 21:56:00 | I have struck a problem with our computer which first showed up as the system freezing when playing Microsoft (only)games. Other games are working fine. The game seems to run normally for a few minutes and then freezes completely. It is not the games - I have tried them on other computers. While trying to hunt down the problem I noticed that the system is freezing while in safe mode. This is when you are not doing anything in particular but just looking through the programme menus that it happens. The only fix to either problem is to turn the computer off. Now amongst what I have been doing I am now finding the system is hanging on shutdown and I am left with the Win 98 splash screen. It is not a full hang as scan disc does not run on the next switch on. Supposedly I have made the problem worse with mucking around with drivers etc. I have tried the following: -reinstalling and updating all drivers for the video card, 3D card, and sound card and modem -uninstalled Direct X 7 and gone back to Direct X 6 (have now gone back to Direct X 7) - removed hardware items in device manager(in both normal and safe modes) such as sound card, Voodoo 2 card, modem etc -according to device manager there are no conflicts and everything is working correctly -removed any duplicate hardware entries in device manager in safe mode -run system file checker and registry checker The Microsoft website is unhelpful. I thought it might have been hardware related because in the last two months I have upped the RAM, put in a new PCI sound card and PCI modem, and added a 3D Voodoo 2 card (all at individual times with no apparent problem then). System specs are IDT WinChip 2 3DNow 233, 4.3GB H/D; 64MB RAM; Windows 98;Creative Labs 3d Voodoo 2; S3 Virge video card; Asonic PCI sound card. Any thoughts to help me out of this frustrating problem would be appreciated(prefereably without reinstalling windows). Thanks Darryl Lennane |
