| 3851 | 2000-01-22 22:41:00 | I have a hassle with our system which is resulting in three seperate problems. The first is that the system is hanging in safe mode. The hanging in safe mode shows up even when doing something simple like scanning the menus in Windows explorer. The second problem is that games are completely freezing while being played. Strangely enough it was only 2D games that were affected I have found that to get the games to run okay I have had to lower the 'Hardware Acceleration' setting in the Graphics section of the System section. To get the game to run okay you need to lower this setting to one notch to the right of no acceleration. This is becoming a hassle though because you need to do this before playing any of these games and restart the computer. Other games will not start until you set the acceleration setting back to normal or full acceleration. I have also noticed that when you shut down the computer, a series of vertical lines appear - you can't actually read the Norton's antivirus check screen or the Win98 splash screen when these lines appear. This does not happen every time though. Maybe it is a result of having the acceleration settings too low? I have tried the following: - formatted the disc and reinstalled everything - reinstalled and updated all drivers for the video card, 3D card, and sound card - uninstalled Direct X 7 and gone back to Direct X 6 (have now gone back to Direct X 7) - according to device manager there are no conflicts and everything is working correctly - removed any duplicate hardware entries in device manager in safe mode - run system file checker and registry checker - adjusted the memory settings for the Voodoo 2 card(I had heard they tend to conflict with S3 cards) - tried the Microsoft and Dreamworks websites I thought it might have been hardware related because in the last three months I have upped the RAM, put in a new PCI sound card and PCI modem, and added a 3D Voodoo 2 card (all at individual times with no apparent problem then). System specs are IDT WinChip 2 3DNow 233, 4.3GB H/D; 64MB RAM; Windows 98;Creative Labs 3d Voodoo 2; S3 Virge video card(2MB); Asonic PCI sound card. Do I have three seperate problems or do I have one problem that is giving three different symptoms? Should I be looking at the S 3 Virge 2d/3d video card as the possible culprit??? I thought also the chipset drivers but as far as I can make out I have the latest. Device Manager shows no problems. Any thoughts that anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks Darryl Lennane |
