1261981 2012-02-28 05:02:00 Hi,

I am a small business owner. I am interested to get an online store setup for me and I spoke to a web company (who shall remain anonymous) regarding that. They sent me a quote of $5800 and I am wondering if this is reasonable? The cost includes design and development and will use the CMS Joomla! The idea at the end of the day is that I should be able to update the products on my own etc.

Thanks.

1261982 2012-02-28 05:35:00 Yeah it's not bad. End of the day with an online store you *want* to make sure they're going to support you in the long run, for example keeping your software up to date and secure (Last thing you want is to be hacked and have your website defaced).

Also make sure that includes training on how to use the software and manage the basics yourself, such as products and the likes.

It can be done for a lot less, if you're willing to DIY, but it requires a lot of time, patience, and also some semi-decent knowledge about how things work, especially if you're going to be then start messing with SSL certificates and payment methods / credit-cards....

1261983 2012-02-28 07:00:00 Decent price but personally wouldn't go with Joomla. Depending on what content you want I would go for a Magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com/) or opencart or something like that. Both these 2 have a good support group for e-commerce and their systems in New Zealand, where as I can't say I've come across anyone that does Joomla sites in NZ :). dpDesignz (15919)
1261984 2012-02-28 07:46:00 I'm pretty clueless about web design and whatnot, but the developer did show me how to use the platform and it seems quite easy.

So what he is asking for isn't too unreasonable?

1261988 2012-02-28 10:00:00 No worries, just ensure that they do things like pay for the SSL Certificate for like 3 years, and potentially throw in hosting for a year or something as well... Chilling_Silence (9)
1261989 2012-02-28 10:08:00 Yea I agree with Chilling. Are you putting in paypal and DPS as well? Make sure you get all your details sorted as DPS can take up to 3 months to approve. If you're not maintaining it then Joomla is fine. :). Just make sure you find out the ongoing costs afterwards as well. Set up cost may be good, but maintenance from the company may be. dpDesignz (15919)

I have. But Joomla is bloat.

Have a look at chromatix.co.nz (NOt the Joomla people)
