1237961 2011-10-17 00:31:00 Hi folks

With the cost of icecream being so expensive nowadays has anyone had expereince with icecream makers.
Are they worth the extra effort involved - I would imagine it is cheaper than buying good quality icecream.
Anyone got a favourite recipe for icecream makers?
TIA
Smithie

1237962 2011-10-17 01:12:00 Supermarket ice cream is not that bad in price.

I have seen recipes, but they use a ton of egg yolks, cream and milk so that won't be cheap. Might be worth it if you are eg .. comparing it to more prem ice cream though.

1237963 2011-10-17 01:20:00 My mum used to make ice cream years ago. A bit like soda stream, not bad, cheaper (maybe) but nothing like the real thing! Gobe1 (6290)
1237964 2011-10-17 03:30:00 In our experience, a lot of effort for only two small servings of ice cream. We have not used it for many months and prefer to buy ice cream when it is on special (or frozen desserts). user (1404)
1237965 2011-10-17 03:54:00 EasiYo make a low fat icecream mix.....add water...freeze...melt slightly to sorbay consistency....beat with a powerful beater....freeze. A packet of Chocolate icecream mix makes up to 3 litres, vanilla somewhat less.
Costs $40 for 10 packets online, free delivery.

For some reason local supermarkets stopped selling it several years ago.

1237966 2011-10-17 04:12:00 the one i know u need to boil it then put in machine. costs, 2l or 1l milk, maybe 300ml cream, vanilla essence or more pricey vanilla beans $4? I only know egg yolk 10 or so ... Not sure on alternatives. Nomad (952)
1237967 2011-10-17 06:28:00 I use our one to make sorbets from the excess of fruits our trees produce, plum and feijoa sorbets are wonderful through summer lagbort (5041)
1237968 2011-10-17 08:28:00 Thanks guys for your comments. Most probably will try making some without a machine and see what happens. All your input was much appreciated though. Terry we might try the EasiYo product. smithie 38 (6684)
1237969 2011-10-17 09:02:00 You could get a Sunbeam ice cream churning machine for about $60 ...

Without machine, you may get ice forming on the ice cream. The supposedly instructions is that you are suppose to beat it often to prevent it happening.

fwiw here is a recipe without needing a machine.

I tried that once, it worked well, but having to beat it manually for an hour or whatever wasn't a huge amount of fun.
