4151 2000-03-03 20:40:00 I have had problems setting up an ISA modem in two different 486 computers.

I tried to set this modem up in another 486 a while ago (my letter is in the latest PC World)without success. Win 95 refused to detect it. I gave up in the end and settled for an external modem which worked fine.

I am having the same trouble with the same modem in another 486. The computer refuses to detect it and in fact the mouse locks up and refuses to work when the modem card is plugged in.

Presumably it doesn't like the modem being plugged in and when you remove the modem the mouse works okay again.

I have tried 'installing a new modem' and 'Installing new hardware' through the control panel- Win 95 says it doesn't detect any new modems.

Is there a problem with this sort of modem in a 486? I know the modem is okay because it gets detected okay by other PC's (Pentium variety) and works fine.

Do I need to change any of the jumper settings on the modem to get it to work in computers of this vintage?

I have looked in Device Manager and it shows no obvious problems. The mouse is shown as a serial mouse and doesn't have an IRQ assigned to it. The com ports are on IRQ's 3 and 4.

I have looked at teh BIOS settings but there is no scope there for any real changes apart from disabling some of the IRQ's.

The modem is a Dynalink 33.6 ISA.

The computer is an Artec 486 - with Win 95, 16MB RAM and a 420MB H/D and Award BIOS.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am a bit despearte because we are shifting on Monday and really only have this weekend to look at the problem.

Thanks
