| 4147 | 2000-03-03 11:16:00 | For the last 12 or so days I have been experiencing between approx. 5:00pm & 12:00pm web pages taking 4 min + to load & plenty of can not find server error for both local & offshore servers. Essentially it has been impossible to do anything between these hours. After reading today the article 'troubleshoot a slow interenet connection' I thought enough is enough & time to my arm myself with some facts. Eight or so ping tests of my isp server between 5:30 & 10:00pm ended in about 50% of ping tests giving 100% data lost rate. After 10:00pm being offline for 10 minutes reconnected & have d/l 8 megs from geocities.com at an av. of 3.4 k/sec, normal/average d/l speed for me is about 3.6 to 4.0k/sec. Connection rate 33600 bps whereas 99% of the time I connect at 36000 bps. Oddly a few months ago 99% of time my connect rate was 40000 bps & on one other occassion I recall got a lower than norm connect rate but decent d/l speed. Is it possible that connecting at a lower rate my modem & isp modem are more compatiable???? I have 56k V90 no name isa modem card which was supplied with the pc purchased from my isp. Please do not suggest updating drivers. After doing a clean os install I contacted my isp for the right drivers & got the cheque in the mail story so gave up & spent hours searching for a driver as found it impossible to get a driver match on info. obtained from quering my modem. The driver I found (took a punt that dynalink was the best source as isp was selling dynalink products) & installed has the same driver info. in device manager as existed for driver info. before os clean install. In other words I will consider buying a new modem before wasting more time on a witch hunt for better drivers. Also I am certain/have checked network config & modem set up are correct. Also switching between 0867 & 09 dial up number for isp does not make any difference to the situation. Any suggestions welcome or maybe someone else has noticed an extreme decline in service over the last week & more from their isp or is it just me???. Ack 56ker |
