4190 2000-03-08 21:01:00 I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I have recently upgraded my sister in law?s system with some of my old components after I upgraded mine.

Her system was a 486 IBM Aptiva with 8MB RAM and a 14.4 k modem, and is now a Cyrix PR200MMX with 32MB RAM.

It is running the first release of Windows 95 which was upgraded from Windows 3.11.

The problem is that I am trying to install a KTX 33.6K internal modem as well. The processor, motherboard and RAM upgrades have gone well, and all is functioning correctly there.

However, when the modem is installed (I have the correct driver and used it), Internet Explorer and Outlook can?t detect the modem, stating that it has not been installed properly. All the settings in Dial Up Networking are correct.

Windows has assigned the modem to Com port 5 with IRQ 11. Also, it fits in an ISA slot, and when plug and play detects it, it says that it has found a PCI card.

I was under the impression that modems had to be set to Com Port 3 or 4, sharing Com Port 1 or 2 IRQ numbers.

I have tried installing the modem manually by selecting Modem and using the supplied driver disk, and also by letting Windows Auto Detect it with the same results.

The jumpers on the modem card are set by default to Com port 4.

I have seen somewhere that with this version of windows with an S3 video card (which it has), the modem should not be set to Com port 4 as it won?t work due to a bug in this release of Windows.

So I changed the jumpers on the modem card to COM port 3 to see if that would help, but Windows still assigns it to COM port 5, with IRQ 11. Same if the jumpers are set to COM port 2.

In device manager there is no sign of COM port 5, and it states that there are no conflicts on the modem. I have tried to change the COM port in Device manager, but it says that I cannot change these settings as windows assigns them.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
