| 4422 | 2000-04-07 03:45:00 | I have a question that is a bit involved but I am hoping that some of you Techheads out there may be able to tell me if the following idea would be possible to implement. I am about 1 and a half months from building a P2 450mhz Xeon (I cant believe the price of the motherboard) running a single CPU. Now I may have got it wrong but as I understand it if I installed a second Xeon (same speed etc) I could in the OS specify what software uses what CPU to function if the software doesn't use SMP. So am I right in assuming that I could have one CPU running say a Win98/NT dual boot Hard-drive (C:/) and the other running Linux off drive D:/. I will explain how I wish to use this config because it might help to see why. Of course if my basic understanding is wrong then this is a big waste of time :-)). I wish to serve games on the internet under Win98 or NT if the game can run under NT. I want to have an FTP/Web site to upload maps/mods/patches etc, to which the game I am serving points the persons FTP program when it auto updates within the game. I realise I would have to write some sort of program for each game that runs off the actual gameserver but I can sort that eventually. The idea is that instead of the gameserver uploading required files to play, the Linux FTP/Website would do that thus speeding up the game considerably for all players. I am also assuming that I could have 2 100mbit NIC's that would be used by each seperate operating system. Would that mean (if its possible to have 2 Nics in 1 PC) that I would need some sort of router betwwen the net and the server? As you can see my idea is to have 2 PC's running on 1 motherboard with 1 dual boot (Win98/NT) part with its own Harddrive and Nic and 1 Linux with its own harddrive and Nic (both nics connected to the net throgh a router or whatever is required). I intend to approach my ISP to see if they would be interested in integrating it into their setup and offer access free to the public with me remote administering it from home. I want to run a chat group an FTP server and a full website off the Linux drive and one game at a time off the dual boot drive. If this idea is feasible then I would probably go with SCSI drives as most Slot 2 motherboards seem to have it built in. The Xeon is very expensive so it is unlikely that I would purchase a second one (as I really dont need that sort of power otherwise) if this idea cannot work. Looking forward to your responses. Of course have fun hassling me if I am showing off my lack of knowledge. At least I will learn something from it. I do realise even if its possible it could be a bit tricky to set up properly but I love this technical stuff so I would like to give it a go and I have a bit of spare time anyway. I work in entertainment in a technical capacity so work is erratic to say the least. :-) |
