1238924 2011-10-20 20:20:00 Hi Guys

If you are like me you probably hate the new energy saving lamps.

They are very expensive so I doubt if we are saving money.

But my question is has anyone found a nice lamp that gives out the equivalant of 150W or 200W tungsten ?

Some of the early ones were very dark and blueish

Countdown has some that say they are the equivalent of 125W they are $8.00 !
How that will save me money over a few years I am not sure.

1238925 2011-10-20 20:41:00 I quite like them myself, but no I've never seen one rated that high. I do use the 120W equivalents in my lounge because I like to see when I have the lights on, mood lighting is for restaraunts.
There are different colours depending on the phosphors, some have a very harsh bright bluish light and others are more yellow.

As for the money saving I'm not that convinced either, but after 12 years in my house I have just started having to replace some of the original ones, although a couple did fail in the first few months so they do definately last longer on average.

So using approx 1/5th of the power and lasting many times longer I guess they proabably do save a bit eventually but it's not huge. I think the real advantage is to the power companies not the consumer directly, reducing the load over millions of houses / businesses means they can get more life out of existing power stations before needing to add extra for the growing demand.

Of course as power prices increase the savings become more noticeable.

1238926 2011-10-20 21:26:00 I recently replaced a energy saving lamp after about 8 years use. This lamp is used in the lounge every night for up to 4 or 5 hours. I would say I would of used at least 5 or 6 ordinary bulbs in that time. Yes I'm a believer.

12 years !

Have they been out that long ?

The problem for me is trying to find one that I like, as it mean I may have to spend $ 7.00 on something I don't like !

1238928 2011-10-20 21:53:00 Energy savers are OK in bedrooms, hallways, etc, but don't rate them much in the main living, dining, or kitchen area ... prefer halogen even though they're not energy saving. When, and I must stress WHEN, I can afford one, I might have a look at replacing some of the halogens with LED's ... but because they're still so expensive, I may wait until they become more popular ... and cheaper ! 1238929 2011-10-20 22:05:00 My problem with energy savers is that they seem to attract flies. I replaced the ones in the kitchen and no further fly dirt marks on the ceiling around the bulbs, maybe because the energy savers hang down so much. Bryan (147)
1238930 2011-10-20 22:17:00 We find they don't last as long as they should so I am getting an electrician in to check our wiring. We are lucky to get a year out of some of them gary67 (56)

They've been out since the early 1990s. I remember them at Kmart for about $35 each at the time..

1238932 2011-10-21 00:36:00 I think if you buy a good brand, e.g. Philips Tornado (about $8) which emit a strong light in my house. But buying cheapish bulbs from Chinese stores/markets seem to go dark/dull and fail after several months. Comparison table for CFL's (www.consumer.org.nz) from Consumer NZ org. But for > 150 W what's that for? A garage? kahawai chaser (3545)

I agree with you re bedrooms etc.

But what can I use in office or work shop in bayonet caps NOW that are bright and reasonably priced.
LED's are a long way off imho.
