On Sunday, we'll politely listen to the French rendering their National Anthem, us n o doubt thinking what stirring music, what passion, why can't we have something like that? But beware the veiled intent of the French, the bloodthirsty La Marseillaise:

Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
Against us tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts

To arms citizens
Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows

What do they want this horde of slaves
Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
For whom these vile chains
These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!

What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
The masters of destiny

Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors
Bear or hold back your blows
Spare these sad victims
That they regret taking up arms against us
But not these bloody despots
These accomplices of Bouillé
All these tigers who pitilessly
Ripped out their mothers' wombs

We shall enter into the pit
When our elders will no longer be there
There we shall find their ashes
And the mark of their virtues
We are much less jealous of surviving them
Than of sharing their coffins

Pretty violent stuff. And the best we can do in reply is to pussy foot around with Kamate. Kamate, designed to strike fear in the hearts of impudent Northern Hemisphere pretenders to the World Cup. Kamate, the one that celebrates Te Rauparaha hiding (!) in a kumara pit with his wahine sitting on his face (!!) .... OK, enough, enough, we've been there already

1238790 2011-10-20 06:00:00 Yes but everyone knows the French run away and hide too when faced by the enemy, admittedly their not as quick with the white flag as the Italians but they are not that far behind gary67 (56)
1238791 2011-10-20 07:55:00 It sounds like a very catchy song when hearing the French version. I wonder who dreamed up the lyrics. Bobh (5192)

Oh, were the Emperor alive!

1238794 2011-10-20 20:01:00 Knowing that you are a second rate country is hard to live with, so I think a bit of slack is called for. Cicero (40)
1238795 2011-10-20 20:04:00 Probably took them so long to sing the song, they were overwhelmed by the enemy before they finished. Richard (739)
1238796 2011-10-20 21:12:00 Have a look at the Italian anthem as well. Also kind of bloodthirsty... en.wikipedia.org John H (8)
1238797 2011-10-20 23:36:00 Louis XVIII, and Napoleon III banned the song outright. I think that they showed sound judgement. Bobh (5192)
1238798 2011-10-21 02:14:00 The French ran Europe for several hundred years.
And in Napoleon's time they always went forward.

But that aside I still think that new haka with the throat cutting is totally out of line in a modern world.

The whole thing is too long, and if they must keep it, why not rewrite the throat slitting out of it.
