1239008 2011-10-21 05:55:00 Ok, so I have finally got this ruddy thing's magneto working, that was a mission and a half! anyway, after loosing screws that hold the intake manifold together I cant put the carb on but it should at least fire once with a bit of fuel in the cylinder and I had a bit sitting in the intake.

Its a right b*** to keep pull starting, pull, wind, pull, wind so I rigged up a stater motor :D and realised that it was sucking through the exhaust port on the exhaust stroke i presume and blowing out on the intake stroke. Piston rings need replacing and the exhaust valve leaks a bit I presume (a little rusty) but I want to know of it will actually tick over at least once before I take it apart to fix it all... again :p

Anyway, I took a short video demonstrating whats happening. Unfortunately I stop to think for a few mins during the demonstrations, cue awkward silences!

Also, excuse the weird voice, I have been practicing a bit for a vocal acting part (yes there is such a thing) as a result my voice sounds like a polluted kiwi/brittish/retard crossbreed. annoys the heck outta me when I hear it :annoyed:

Its probably just the valve timing is hideously out since the intake port has a lot less force of air being pushed out compared to exhaust. Ill figure out how to adjust that but I thought i'd ask in case someone had a flash of wisdom. And yes, the spark appears good.

Cheers,

EDIT: Since someone is bound to ask, the big red thing is a McEwans piston (bulldoze) pump. An absolute beast of solid cast iron. I'm trying to restore it but struggling to find parts atm. I'd say it delivers a good 250-300+ PSI

1239009 2011-10-21 21:27:00 Buy or Borrow a Briggs & Stratton instruction manual, & when you know what you are doing, do it! Sounds as if you might be turning it backwards! The valves should be 'rocking' at the top of the exhaust stroke & closed during the compression and power strokes. mzee (3324)
1239010 2011-10-21 21:45:00 Don't know whether it's physically possible due to key-ways, but maybe you have the timing out by 180° ... as per mzee, Google a manual if you can. SP8's (9836)
1239011 2011-10-21 23:19:00 Will do, tried running engine forwards and back, I'm guessing the timing is out badly although I don't know unless someone worked on it before me, unlikely but posssible.

Just trying to get the crank out at the moment, being an old pump engine it has a V belt pulley and the screw on that is tight as. Will get some penetrating oil to get it out soon.

Cheers

1239012 2011-10-22 00:10:00 I second mzee, think you're driving it backwards.
This might help

1239013 2011-10-22 00:22:00 Might need a puller for the crank. I had to once for a mower, can't remember what part it was for, may have been the flywheel though. Could try Briggs site search in Google (www.google.co.nz iletype%3Apdf&pbx=1&oq=site:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.briggsandstratton.com%2F+ filetype%3Apdf&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=5176l7442l0l8237l9l9l0l0l0l8l985l6956l6-8l8l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=4d6e928658d79516&biw=1024&bih=444) to pull up manuals, if you don't have a mower serial number. kahawai chaser (3545)
1239014 2011-10-22 03:23:00 Its not a mower and its very unlikely there is a manual on the B&S site, its a 60/70's possibly earlier verticle stationary engine. Only markings found so far are a faded B&S logo on the fuel tank The Error Guy (14052)
1239015 2011-10-22 04:04:00 Do a targeted search in Google images (www.google.co.nz take a photo of the tags_upl=12195l23616l0l28141l37l34l0l12l6l6l1581l2 1686l5-1.13.7.1l22l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=bcec7905a5dceb61&biw=1024&bih=473) - plenty of stationery engines. Maybe take a photo of the tank/other components and upload to Google images for a comparison search match. No serial numbers on other components? What was the engine used for? B/S do have antique manuals (www.briggsandstratton.com) but need a serial number or part of a number. Old engine org (www.oldengine.org) may help for B/S. kahawai chaser (3545)
1239016 2011-10-22 07:27:00 Cheers Kahawai, ill have a search. Probably somewhere hard to see covered by rust. Maybe cast onto the block like pumps The Error Guy (14052)
1239017 2011-10-22 10:51:00 The serial and model numbers are usually stamped on the fan shroud. mzee (3324)
