1238836 2011-10-20 15:32:00 Hi Guys,

I'm looking for some feedback on the attached design - thoughts?

Feel free to be harsh, if it has issues I'd rather know about them before I foist it on my users - I don't have the best eye for design.

In order, the images are: Wide screen layout
Narrow screen layout (top)
Narrow screen layout (bottom)

Thanks,
Erayd

1238837 2011-10-20 17:39:00 The small type in the heading is to hard to read with that background plod (107)
1238838 2011-10-20 18:41:00 The only thing that pops out at me is the adverts, I know thats what they are ment to do, but I hate adverts so it turns me off the page. Sorry
On the plus side, I dont mind the colour scheme or general layout and your site navigation is clear and easy to find.
Good luck

1238839 2011-10-20 18:59:00 I like the widescreen one Gobe1 (6290)
1238840 2011-10-20 20:02:00 The last one seems to be very bland, I would use either of the first or second one though they look good gary67 (56)
1238841 2011-10-20 20:58:00 The first design looks like the one. But perhaps add your profile/bio at the bottom, and in your intro, list benefits, and maybe create your own banner and logo as a more enhanced call to action, and a form of branding, and increased conversions (whatever you want that to be). Also add one of them versign trust/secure images (if not already) below your donate banner. Maybe include a link either to rss feed or a newsletter for visitors to sign up. Also add one of them add this images/links. Currently you have Google +1. Should include facebook, twitter, etc.

Adsense leader boards are best at the top (above the fold). But I would also test with the plain adsense text links (the one with 5 links), with and without including your current top banner. I have had a huge increase in ctr's with text links. Also consider using adsense channels, and to block url's from potential competing advertisers - which may show up in your current banner - which may divert unique web traffic when they click out of your site. The large rectangle ad can work well (if you want that) on the sidebar, particularly for image ads.

Maybe incorporate a search bar, which if you want, can include Google's custom search from within adsense, and for further advanced search refinements at Google Co-op (cse). Article here (searchengineland.com) form a conversion/design specialist.

1238842 2011-10-20 21:23:00 I too think the heading is a bit lost on that back ground, and im thinking the text size is small but maybe thats cos its not screen size?
and its a bit bland / boring looking, i dont particularly feel invited to further my looking......... but then i guess it all comes down to why i would be there?

just my thoughts as i am not a designer,

1238843 2011-10-20 22:44:00 The only thing that pops out at me is the adverts, I know thats what they are ment to do, but I hate adverts so it turns me off the page.Mmm, I don't like them either. Unfortunately the site barely covers its rather pricey hosting requirements, and it still needs a better server - so the ads will have to stay for now. The plan is to disable them if / when the site makes enough income to sustain itself without the ads.

The last one seems to be very bland, I would use either of the first or second one though they look goodCan you clarify what you're talking about here? All three images are of the same design.

The first design looks like the one.Again, not sure what you're getting at here - there is only one design, can you clarify what you mean here?

But perhaps add your profile/bio at the bottom...It's not a blog; that kind of information has no business being on the site ;-).

...and in your intro, list benefits, and maybe create your own banner and logo as a more enhanced call to action, and a form of branding...What are you trying to suggest here? I'm not quite sure what all this is supposed to be in aid of.

Also add one of them versign trust/secure images (if not already) below your donate banner. Why? It would just take up valuable screen real-estate, and this is not (and has no need to be) a secure site.

Maybe include a link either to rss feed or a newsletter for visitors to sign up.I can't do this - there's no news to put in such a feed! FLAG is a relatively static service.

Also add one of them add this images/links. Currently you have Google +1. Should include facebook, twitter, etc.Already got those - you missed 'em. They're in the same bar as the G+ button, and there's also an entire sidebar box dedicated to twitter.

Adsense leader boards are best at the top (above the fold). But I would also test with the plain adsense text links (the one with 5 links), with and without including your current top banner.I've tested this over the last few months - image ads seem to make the most money, but they annoy me more than everything else (except flash ads).

I have had a huge increase in ctr's with text links.Mmm, I thought that would be the case too, but for some reason FLAG's users seem to like clicking on images.

Also consider using adsense channels, and to block url's from potential competing advertisers - which may show up in your current banner - which may divert unique web traffic when they click out of your site.As far as I'm aware, none of my competitors advertise, but I'll bear it in mind.

The large rectangle ad can work well (if you want that) on the sidebar, particularly for image ads.Sadly, the large rectangle doesn't fit there - it's too big. So is the medium one.

Maybe incorporate a search bar, which if you want, can include Google's custom search from within adsense...My site doesn't have enough content to require a search engine - what you see on the navbar is pretty much what you get; anything you don't see a link to is generally a message of some kind (errors, status messages etc).

I too think the heading is a bit lost on that back ground, and im thinking the text size is small but maybe thats cos its not screen size?
and its a bit bland / boring looking, i dont particularly feel invited to further my looking.........Thanks - can you expand on which text you find too small? The text size is unrelated to the screen size; it doesn't change.

...but then i guess it all comes down to why i would be there? You'd be there because you wanted to download fanfiction, and most likely you ended up at my site because someone recommended it, or you already knew about it. Around 75% of my traffic is returning visitors who clicked a bookmark, and over half the new visitors are following links from other places that recommend it.

Thanks heaps guys - very useful feedback :D.

1238844 2011-10-20 23:03:00 1 or 2 ... I suppose it really depends on the monitor used by the person visiting the site. One thing I would suggest, is getting better contrast between the background andtext used in the header to make the site name stand out more ... try all silver or other lighter colour. SP8's (9836)
1238845 2011-10-21 00:29:00 OK . I'm thinking from a SEM/SEO (marketing) perspective for targeting search engine traffic, regarding landing page optimization for home page, where listing benefits, banner for your utility, social proof, etc might increase conversions, from unique search engine visits, in addition to your current referrals . There's is a industry for that sort of SEM/SEO thing . Not sure if that approach would appeal to you, since might be a bit promotional or not your style .

I have read that a small green banner can increase conversions . Or a demo/trial . Or using a little bold content (has worked for one on my blogs - got more conversions) . But of course involves testing (A/B splitting) using something like Google website optimizer along with their Google analytics, by setting up conversion goals, to help increase conversions .

I agree if it's largely static for content, then probably don't need internal search, unless if you were to add more utilities or platform types, apps, add-ons, etc and any associated content .
