4919 2000-06-01 11:45:00 I am upgrading a friends computer from a 486dx4/100 to an AMDk6II/500 and an MVP motherboard. I have done motherboard upgrades in the past but have never come across the following problem. The HDD & CD rom was previously runing from a cable which ran from the sound card. I assumed the CD was the slave (creative model cr-563-b made by matsushita). The system wouldn't boot with the CDs IDE cable attatched, in fact nothing happened at all. On closer inspection of the CD drive, I noticed there isn't any jumpers, labelled master & slave, only 4 pairs called 'ID' labelled 0,1,2&3. I have tried the jumper on all different combinations of these including no jumper at all but it makes no difference. The original setting was 0. Unplugging the CD Lets the system boot part way (the HDD seems to be working ok) but before win95 finishes loading, I get a message saying 'CD isn't connected make sure its turned on'. Upon choosing abort windows continues to load then I get the message 'windows protection error you must restart your system'. I can restart windows in safe mode and there doesn't appear to be any conflicts in the device manager of the control panel. I have reloaded windows but this hasn't made any difference. I then connected another CD from my own machine and although the BIOS detected it, I still received a message saying the CD wasn't connected. Somebody please help before I pull out what little hair I have left. Guest (0)
