4895 2000-05-30 01:32:00 Gateway solo 9100 XL laptop, 233MHz,64MB SDRAM. The model has been a huge problem with screen failures, lock outs, crashes etc. After the 6th complete Chassis replacement (viz everything but memory and hard drive),it seemed to go OK so I converted to win98. About 1 in every 3 boot-ups greet me with 'windows protection error...restart' or 'device file in system.ini is damaged ...vmcpd' or 'cannot start windows because WMM32 files not found'. With restart up it usually sorts out. I have reformatted reinstalled 98 but problem persists and seems to be getting more frequent Any ideas on how to overcome this without going back to a complete re-installation. Guest (0)
