1240061 2011-10-26 09:37:00 Especially for language translation by speech recognition, would an iPhone be better or an Android?
An iPhone4 cost $899 (see here (store.apple.com)) so for a fair comparison, lets choose an Android at about the same price - I guess one of the Samsung Galaxy's would be a good starting point. The iPhone4 has HD video and a 5mp camera, which seems good to me.

The phone is not for me. I don't like Apple products and would go for an Android.

The phone is for a friend who saw (today) a guy use his iPhone3 to translate: He spoke Spanish and it gave the correct English text translation. My friend is going to Argentina, knows some Spanish, and wants an iPhone or Android phone mainly for the translation but also for a camera / video. I will show her this thread, with your comments, so fire away and give us your thoughts. Thanks. (BTW: Telecom XT)

...but I don't see a comparison between iPhone and Android. (Unless I missed something, must admit I did not watch the video - going to hit the sack now... :sleep)

1240065 2011-10-26 18:40:00 Because that's an Android app. The Android app does 'conversation' style translations.

iPhone was still text-based translation last time I used it, though it may have improved since then.

1240066 2011-10-26 18:50:00 Good morning Chill. OK so I can tell my friend that Android is the way to go since it will do speech to speech translation, as well as speech to text. Correct?

If you want to throttle me for not watching the video, well... right, going to watch it now...

Violent Cic? ...<pause>...<confused>...

Oh - "hit the sack" - LOL.

Interesting. Hard to believe, seeing that Jobs *hated* Android. Anyhow, I will let my friend choose between an iPhone4 and a Galaxy S II (einfo.co.nz).
At 16 Gb the Galaxy has double the memory of the iPhone4.

Not sure about processing speed, or how RAM compares between an iPhone and Galaxy.
I was hoping some colourful PF1ers would add their views but maybe Job's passing has dampened the Apple vs Android fire.

1240070 2011-10-26 19:55:00 I think either will be fine, they are both great devices and have their pro's and cons. In terms of what you can do with them I don't think there's anything much one can do the other won't.

What seperates them for me is size and peripherals and software, Apple have it all to themselves in terms of docks etc. I have a galaxy though, because I really don't want iTunes on my pc. I much prefer to copy files manually in mass storage mode on android than be stuck with proprietary software. You don't hear EITHER iphone owners OR android owners often saying how unhappy they are with their choice so just pick whichever and be happy.
