1239702 2011-10-25 08:57:00 I was just wondering that from what I read, Android is based off the kernel of Linux and that MS could produce a Pad OS as well. Given that MS OS and Linux OS both are pretty much compatible with various hardware and peripherals incl printers and scanners. Could they not implement that for Pad devices  and maybe run many of the same software - particularly when we see dual core Pads arriving etc .. Vista/7 has tablet functions now built into the OS ...... Maybe something like a Windows 7 Starter Pad version. Nomad (952)
1239703 2011-10-25 18:49:00 Windows 8 is already heavily designed around touchscreen /tablet interface... inphinity (7274)

Fixed that for you.

1239705 2011-10-26 04:44:00 Windows 8 is already clumsily designed around touchscreen /tablet interface...
Was this what you meant? ;)

I found the right meaning! :D

1239707 2011-10-26 08:12:00 Windows are devices for letting light into your house.

Better.

Microsoft is busy porting Windows to run on ARM CPUs at the moment, and once this is done it should also be able to run on these devices (subject to having the necessary drivers).

Running the same applications is a bit more complex. This is generally not a problem for Linux, as most of the software tends to be open source (and can therefore be recompiled by the applicable packager). Windows, on the other hand, is pretty much SOL in this department unless Microsoft can convince squillions of developers to recompile and release updates for the many millions of closed-source Windows applications currently targeted at x86.

The main issue here isn't API compatibility, but platform CPU architecture.

I believe I've seen a screenshot of x86 Office running on an ARM processor, but I could be wrong...

There are millions of smart phones and pads out there running on ARM and MS are feeling left out.
Arm are fairly economical on power.
