| 1239086 | 2011-10-22 00:30:00 | With the advent of NZ SFB "just around the corner", a new service called Measurement Lab (http://www.measurementlab.net/) has developed a series of tools with which users can more deeply analyse their broadband and mobile provider's service. Measurement Lab's service is free and does not collect personal data. Their tools page (www.measurementlab.net) gives you access to 8 different tools and significantly expands on the standard "what's my speed" test. |

I happened to hear this not-for-profit service being discussed at length on Radio NZ shortly after 12 noon today and thought PC World readers might be interested. Did you actually visit the website to find out for yourself or were you looking to gun someone down? |

Sure I went and had a look, thought the site was pretty bad and the tools on it just as bad - and the one I tried out was inaccurate (actually, the information given was plain false). Basically, its just a big pile of links that go to other sites, apart from their speedtest, which if you wanted to test speed i'd prefer speedtest . net and pingtest . net since you can choose different servers and compare international speeds etc |

Cheers I tried out the tools on that site while trying to troubleshoot my connection. Gave me all sorts of error codes while assuring me it detected no fault on the line. Then I had tech come out and found a loose wire at splitter/demarc point. Running the tests again gave the same results, loads of errors and still no fault. Strange that the errors remained the same during both tests yet I know for a fact that some of the results were wrong. I would use the tools with caution. |

For two people that should know what they are talking about, it is a shame they dont. "The current set of data is half a Petabyte.... a Petabyte is a giga giga byte, so its a million gigabytes". Well sorry, its not, its 1000 gigabytes!!! "We look on the screen and we have and upload speed and download speed, the upload speed is 14Mbps and your download speed is 6Mbps, these are the sorts of speeds that we would hope to see when we get ultra fast broadband installed around the place". Huh? You have to be kidding. Such a Shame! :groan: |
