1240101 2011-10-28 22:38:00 Entertaining comments guys, but I will now return to the question I put on this thread...

It now appears that my friend should get an iPhone instead of the Galaxy since Google Translate on an Android needs an internet connection to work, whereas the iPhone translate program is a stand alone program, not needing the internet. No problem I guess as she will be happy with an iPhone 4, but if it was me I would want the much higher performing iPhone 4S, with more than 8 Gb storage.

Correct?Yes, depending on part of the question you are talking about. I say if you want the 4s get from oz. There should be some place online that will ship to nz

Sorry, wrong part. My question - as the original poster of this thread - concerns my friend who wants to use an iPhone or Android for language translation. She will not care if it is a iPhone 4 or 4S.

Therefore:

Is this correct? [My friend should get an iPhone instead of the Galaxy since Google Translate on an Android needs an internet connection to work, whereas the iPhone translate program is a stand alone program, not needing the internet.]

1240103 2011-10-28 23:35:00 Do you think Plod is in cahoots with Qantas?
How many seats in a cahoot? Did Quantas get rid of their Airbuses?

1240104 2011-10-29 01:59:00 Is this correct? [My friend should get an iPhone instead of the Galaxy since Google Translate on an Android needs an internet connection to work, whereas the iPhone translate program is a stand alone program, not needing the internet.]The above statement is incorrect. Google translate requires an internet connection on both iOS and Android.

The same goes for voice recognition - to perform full natural language transcription, both systems require an internet connection.

If you're after an offline product, something like this (market.android.com) may be a better bet.

Note that if you're searching for something that you can speak to in English, and have it speak the response back in another language, as far as I'm aware there are no phone apps capable of this, on any platform, that can do so without an internet connection.

pricespy.co.nz (A 16GB version is available)

pricespy.co.nz

Erayd is correct, the iOS app needs a connection to translate - the same as Android.

Erayd and darkstar09 - :thanks That is the answer I was looking for.

Thanks also for the PriceSpy link - good prices - I will recommend that my friend get the Galaxy SII, 16 Gb.

1240107 2011-10-30 18:43:00 I've been a loyal blackberry user for about 3 years but i think i want to get an iphone now. This may be a dumb question but can you store music on an iphone (like 100-200 songs)? Like could I use it as an ipod and iphone?

1240108 2011-11-17 20:44:00 Update: My friend has decided to get an iPhone 4S, not the Android. A friend with an iPhone showed her that the voice-to-text-to-speech translation application does NOT need an internet connection (whereas Android does need the internet). Strommer (42)
1240109 2011-11-17 22:10:00 A friend with an iPhone showed her that the voice-to-text-to-speech translation application does NOT need an internet connection...Do you know the name of this application (or even better have a link to it)?

I've never seen an app that could do voice recognition on the phone without offloading some of the work to another server, so I'd love to know who has managed to solve this.

1240110 2011-11-18 01:22:00 I probably won't see the person who has the iPhone translation app until Wednesday,
but I will ask and post back here with the program name. I believe he paid $50 USD for the app.
