1263906 2012-03-11 03:05:00 My HD5770 is still going just fine. I would rather have got a Geforce but the Radeon was cheaper. I guess that fits with their drivers though! Agent_24 (57)
1263907 2012-03-11 03:22:00 So cheap drivers cause crashes, and generally suck. But expensive drivers cause your 590 to catch on fire right? icow (15313)
1263908 2012-03-11 03:51:00 Are you talking about this?

"The problem was captured on video by the guys at SweClockers, and is apparently a result of the card drawing more power when overclocked or overvolted than its power circuitry can handle.

However, the problem can only occur if you overclock or overvolt the card, and only if you use an older driver. The GeForce 267.52 driver that was originally given out to the press, and which might be available from some websites, does not activate a safety mechanism that prevents damage to the card’s power components. However, Nvidia's latest driver does feature overcurrent protection."

If so, you cannot solely blame the drivers. For a start, you have to have overclocked (and more importantly, over-volted) it first (something they will tell you is not supported and likely to void warranties) and then you must use drivers which are out of date (the new ones don't do this)

Besides, some ATi cards also have a similar problem, especially when stress tested with Furmark.

1263909 2012-03-12 01:07:00 Just wondering...
what are the games that need lots of GPU horsepower nowdays ??
And what are the usefull benchmarks to look at nowdays ?? Is futuremark still relevant ??

Cheers

All of them? They likely won't be getting any lighter.

I find benchmarks only useful for stress testing. For actual performance measurement they seem pointless. Who plays a game by watching a benchmark?

If you want to know how well your computer runs playing a certain game, then play that actual game, forget some possibly-biased benchmark software.

Thats all I have time for at the mo.
I have to admit the GPU grunt needed for me playing trademe isnt that high.

I was wondering what benchmarks are most relevant for comparing cards , when looking and reviews.
Some benchmarks are from games themsleves, some of these games seem a bit old though.

1263912 2012-03-12 02:05:00 I like to refer to Toms monthly article myself, latest one here www.tomshardware.com
No site is perfect, but at least Tom's test with real games and explain the reccomendations. The chart on the last page is my main reference, giving a good approximation of relative performance.
