1264353 2012-03-11 23:14:00 OK lets see if it is the actual problem - daemonu is the Nvidia update service.

Something to try, click start, type in msconfig in the results, select it, then go to the services Tab in the check box, bottom left corner, tick " Hide all Microsoft Services" Scroll down and locate Nvidia update Service daemonu - Untick it.

3649

Reboot and see if it fixes the crashing. If it does, two things you can do:

1. Do nothing and leave it alone as the update service is corrupted.
2. Go to Control panel, programs and features, locate and uninstall the Nividia update program. OR completely remove the nvidia drivers and reinstall fresh ones from Nvidias site, this time dont install the update option. If you decide to uninstall, use Driver-Sweeper (phyxion.net) Run it, select Nvidia graphics & physx ( if its there). The after a reboot, install the fresh ones you just downloaded.

1264354 2012-03-15 03:12:00 Wainui that appeared to fix the problem but now the mouse and keyboard are freezing.

Any further ideas?

Should I try a Windows repair and if so how?

1264355 2012-03-15 03:41:00 Event viewer says it may be something called "Kernel-Power" Chris Randal (521)
1264356 2012-03-15 03:55:00 Try some of the options here (social.technet.microsoft.com). Disable speedstep in the BIOS, if your CPU supports it. Or follow this (support.microsoft.com). Disable overclocking, if you overclock Speedy Gonzales (78)
1264357 2012-03-15 19:56:00 Where in the BIOS do I find speedstep Speedy?

I have a windows 7 disc - should I try an over the top install?

1264358 2012-03-15 20:12:00 Whats the specs of the system?? Is it an Intel or AMD CPU?? If its AMD it wont support speedstep Speedy Gonzales (78)
1264359 2012-03-15 20:17:00 Sorry - its an Intel Chris Randal (521)
1264360 2012-03-15 20:19:00 Well speedstep may or may not be in the BIOS. You'll have to go through the menus in the BIOS. To see if its there. On here, speedstep is under the CPU configuration menu Speedy Gonzales (78)
1264361 2012-03-17 19:22:00 With a sense of total frustration, and not being able to understand fully the fix above, I did a Windows 7 repair.

I also removed the kids user accounts.

These two steps seemed to fix the problem until the kids started playing Minecraft under the guest account and the hard hangs started again.

Should I ban the kids from minecraft (which, touch wood and other pagan rituals, doesn't seem to affect my Vista machine)?
