You could apply that reasoning to many things.

1239181 2011-10-23 14:28:00 I'd say you got off lightly.:2cents:

Reason: Saturday Night - after normal business hours - and more than likely urgent, Young child possibly upset.

Only other option break a window to gain access or the door to get her out.
or use a knitting needle in hole on outside.

What hole? Key hole? Key hole on outside, hinges on inside, doorknob screws on inside.
Didn't really want to start breaking things......I thought it was a good price and he came fast. Probably lets kids out of locked things all the time..................

A lot of times with internal door locks like in bathrooms there is a hole in the handle where you insert a needle to unlock them but if it has a key hole on the outside it doesn't sound like one of them.

No. But it occurred to me to change the bathroom one and the new one has a button, don't need to push, just turn handle and it unlocks from inside - out side there's a slot and you turn with whatevers handy and it releases.

Preparation for next weekend............

I was going to suggest that, it's what my bathroom has. Good for privacy but easy to unlock if needed.
Might I suggest to store a spare key somewhere safe OUTSIDE any lockable internal rooms :)

1239186 2011-10-24 22:25:00 A few months back my elder sister got stuck in the the dunny when the toilet door 'privacy lock' broke and jammed the latch. (No, she didn't lock it, the damned thing just fell apart internally as the door closed!) To make matters worse, she was not yet 'suitably clothed' to receive visitors.

Her husband is partially disabled with arthritis and couldn't do much to help, so he called me as the closest family member. I went round with a hinge-pin punch and small hammer plus various other implements of destruction in case demolition was required, but it was not that easy! The lock was dismantled as much as possible from the outside but it couldn't be freed up, the door hinge pins were on the inside (wouldn't you know it!) and the window was about 5-6 metres above ground level. We managed to pass the tools in from a deck via a long stick (used before I arrived to pass clothes in as well). She punched out the pins in short order and we then thought that a simple push would free it up but no such luck. Not even a good kick would shift it and finally it took several whacks with a brick to knock each hinge free and even with a protective block of wood to spread the load, the door still ended up with some damage around the hinge area.

All the usual jokes were made, but it wasn't a very pleasant experience and was one of those situations where a locksmith might not have been any help at all, though I suppose they would carry all the necessities for that sort of situation.

It would have been pretty bad if she lived alone!

Cheers
