| 5062 | 2000-06-11 06:37:00 | I run an older Pentium 133 (32MB RAM) with Win95B (ie Version 3) on it. I bought Word2000 upgrade. HISTORY: I have had Word6 on this machine for 4 years and no problems. Recently I did some contract work and installed Word97 in addition, used it to the end of the contract, and then deinstalled it using Norton Cleansweep. INSTALL SAGA: when I first installed Word2000, the install failed with error 2343. This turned out to be caused by a prior install of Lotus Notes so I downloaded a fix program from Microsoft's knowledge base, ran this and then reran the install which worked fine. I did a customised install where I loaded lots of options. I already have IE5 & Outlook installed (courtesy of PCWorld's free CD). PROBLEM: when I run Word2000, it will randomly crash for no good reason with a blue screen which I escape from, but then Word is locked solid and I have to 'three finger fix' (Ctrl+Alt+Del reboot) the machine. Needless to say, my partner who wants to use all the graphics bits in Word is very unimpressed. I run only Win95 and Word and nothing else at these times but it still crashes. TEMP SOLUTION: I set autosave to run every 2 minutes and I reinstalled Word6 in addition so that we have a solid word processor to use in the interim. I did not want to uninstall/reinstall Word2000 until I have researched the problem. QUESTION: is this linked to the Office2000 problems which will be fixed by SR1 that Jula wrote about? I'm nervous about installing it cause the cure seems worse than the problems? Should I hang off for 1 to 2 months till SR1 gets fixed up? Thanks Paul |
