| 5361 | 2000-07-05 10:05:00 | Recently I have been having problems with Windows 98 SE. I have a Hewlett Packard 6506 computer which has 64MB RAM (Windows says there is 60MB) 450MHz AMD K-6 CPU. The problems I have had have happened withen the past couple of weeks: - One day I turned on the computer and during start-up, I got the message 'Bad command or filename Windows cannot find WIN.COM. Windows cannot continue to load' I pointed WIndows in the right direction and I was away again. I checked the files in the System Configuration Utility and found in Autoexec.bat two lines at the bottom with strange characters. It went like this: PATH=[strange characters] [strange characters] I edited the first line to path C:\WINDOWS and the second to WIN.COM. It is alright but start-up now takes longer and there is more Hard Drive activity than before. -Just today the computer started-up, and when Windows loaded not all the programs at start-up loaded (AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, and Flyswat Desktop). Then a couple of seconds later, a folder opened up (C:\Program - A folder I made for a programs install) and Flyswat Desktop loaded. OnScreen Display doesn't work and the Pavilion Keyboard buttons work (not the normal keyboard buttons that every keyboard has.) I have no idea whats wrong because I loaded up the computer in the morning and this never happened. I have been tempted to put in the System Recovery disk that came with the computer but I didn't in the end. Whats wrong with my computer??? |
