| 1241391 | 2011-11-02 06:46:00 | My wive returned from Aus with a Telstra prepaid mobile. Worked great over there but costs 65c to send a txt over here. Telstra told her it could cost about $100 AU to unlock so it would take a NZ sim. A brief search on the net shows several sites where a unlock code can be purchased for $19.95 US if the IMEI number is supplied. Questions: Is this legal to do? If so has anyone here done this & could recomend a safe site? Is it going to finish up the same as a NZ bought one? |

| 1241393 | 2011-11-02 20:55:00 | It's quite legal to do, provided it's not a subsidised phone (if it was subsidised by Telstra, then the legal waters are a little murkier, and I'm not sure which jurisdiction this would come under). Once unlocked, you should be able to use it with any NZ network using frequencies that the phone is compatible with. I can't recommend a site for this sorry, I generally purchase my phones unlocked to start with to avoid the hassle. Note that the method also depends on the model of phone, so if you're after recommendations you may want to post that. Depending on the phone, you may also be able to do this yourself. |
