2011-10-31 23:31:00 | @Gary67 After reading your description of it, SM looks pretty good. The problem with all of these new systems we are being offered is that we don't really know the ins and outs of them. Ie How they will work in practice. It took "us" a few elections to get our heads around MMP. And we all voted for that as we got the idea that it was the best system and that STV sounded like a disease. You mean to say that you had not read the description of SM before now?

2011-11-01 03:18:00 | We the people should be voting for all MPs’, whether 90 or 120, so, which one of the 4 options covers the additional 30 hangers on? FPP would get us back to the 99 electorate seats, or would it, knowing pollys' as we do. Lurking.

2011-11-01 03:35:00 | If politicians were paid depending on what they had actually achieved, many would need food parcels. We have far too many* politicians, but tinkering with the system is unlikely to result in any change from the current *** fiasco. * =>1

2011-11-01 03:40:00 | According to Nick Smith who I know was touting for votes at the time, when he was interviewed by the Nelson Mail said that going to SM would actually reduce the number of politicians by 20. But according to the Elections website I linked earlier there is no mention of a reduction, it's a pity they can't all speak from the same hat. | gary67 (56) | |

2011-11-01 06:02:00 | Not sure who I will be voting for. Neither Labour or National seem to have anything make me vote for them. | QW. (15883) | |
2011-11-01 06:58:00 | To all those who thinking that FPP is the answer to our prayers let me make a couple of points. ;) 1: As Ive already pointed out, the earliest possible year to change the Electoral System is 2017. 2: The deficiencies of the FPP system was exposed as far back as 1954 when a Party called Social Credit polled 11% of the total vote and didnt get one seat. In the meantime, in 1978 and 1981, National remained in power although Labour held the most votes. 3: A Royal Commission in 1985 recommended MMP to overcome the unfairness of the FPP system. :D 4: It took until 1993 for MMP to be voted in and become the new system. As for changing it again? Well you can spend the rest of your life trying to but I sure as hell aint. :D

In the meantime, in 1978 and 1981, National remained in power although Labour held the most votes. And there's the major flaw with FPP. Frankly, in this day and age if (say) the Greens don't get into Parliament there's something seriously wrong. |
