1265388 2012-03-16 02:02:00 Hello,

I am wondering can I use a brand new E6600 LGA775 (fan) on a Core 2 duo E8400 3Ghz processor?

I got a brand new fan for my processor from trademe just a week ago and didn't even think about whether this should be allowed to be used on this processor. I haven't tested it out yet, because I still need some other components like psu, but I am a little worried I might end up frying my cpu.

Just a note, this CPU is second hand (Core 2 duo E8400 3Ghz processor) and FAN is brand new, and also the mother board (Asus P5G41T-MLX). Both processors do support this motherboard type, but I didn't think for a moment about the fan. The difference for E6600 LGA775 (fan) is a little smaller than the original one which came with the Core 2 duo processor which is really huge and really dusty and dirty (hence the 2nd hand quality)

Any suggestions or recommendations.

Cheers.

If it stays under 80 it's safe but preferably under 70. If it goes over 90 it's in the danger zone, shut down the test immediately. The cooler the better though, you could always clean up the original fan and use it unless there's something wrong with it?

Realistically you won't load your cpu like prime 95 does very often, and usually with a factory cooler I'd expect temps to hit somewhere between high 50's and low 70's.
