The only "experiment" to go wrong with me was a while back making fuel alcohol, one of my mates closed the ball valve from the boiler keg to the still causing the safety valve that I built to blow out. Unfortunately the brazing around the valve wasn't to good and it flew off into a carboy of 120 proof ethanol. Needless to say the ensuing fireball consumed our days efforts in less than a minuet :p |

I didn't witness it, but aparently my mate droped his pants quick-smart when it happened and spared himself serious injury. To a young teen too inhibited to downtrou (or too stupid to downtrou) he could have suffered horrible burns while seeking a more PC solution than streaking to the garden hose. Had a client who told me of lifting a lead-acid battery off a tractors wheel arch. The battery got tipped, and he got acid in his face and eyes. As is typical with tractors, these things happen a half hours drive from medical help, and well away from the house. This guy had the good sense to fling himself into the pig-swill. It was the only thing handy to dilute the acid, and it worked. He saved himself from any lasting damage (he's his own hero for making a good, if distasteful judgement in an instant) Golden rule when it comes to strong acids, alkalis (lime, cement) in the eyes is just flush it immediately and continuously with whatever you can find. Obviously clean water is desirable, and cold water is better. Cold saline is ideal, but don't waste 30 seconds chasing a 'better' fluid when there is any remotely suitable fluid handy to give the eyes a quick flush to dilute the harm. The latest advisory I saw at work basically said to straddle the victim and flood their eyes with water. To hell with being gentle, to hell with the mess. Failing to act immediately may mean a lifetime of disability for the victim. |
