5744 2000-08-06 05:25:00 I've had to do a clean re-install of Windows 98 and all the appropriate driver. That part was successful but I have a problem where the computer won't recognise the COM port the modem is connected to.
I have COM ports 1 & 2 on the computer and the modem always insists on assigning itself to COM 3!.
In Device Manager I remove the modem and other wave devices in the sound section and reboot allowing the plug and play to find the new device. It does, but always on COM 3.
In the BIOS the COM port detection is on auto. Both ports work under Norton Utilities, as does the modem on COM 3, but the computer doesn't recognise the modem port.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers and thanks.
